Approach to learning and assessment

To complete the requirements for the Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation you will be required to successfully complete 9 Core Units, and 3 Education Practice Stream Units

Classes are timetabled over 3-4 days, including 1 day of workplacement and unsupervised directed study time. Your workplacement and unsupervised directed study are an integral part of your learning and assessment for the program. Classes are interactive and give you many opportunities to discuss, share ideas and practice new skills. You will participate in classes learning activities such as analysing case studies and scenarios, role plays, group and pair work, online research and reading articles. The work and tasks you complete during the program will focus on the teaching and learning of young people. 

Your assessments will be on-going through the program.

Assessment may include:

  •     question and answer written tasks
  •     oral tasks
  •     group work
  •     projects
  •     online tasks
  •     workbased assessment through demonstration and observation

As this program pathways directly into initial teacher education (ITE) programs it requires Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) accreditation. As part of this requirement, students need a credit average across the 2 semesters in order to pathway into Bachelor of Education programs. Students will be assessed for competency based assessment for all units. In addition, if a student has been assessed as competent then 7 of the 9 core units listed below will have parts of assessments graded for literacy, numeracy and/or academic skills.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Workplace is an important part of assessment for the program. Some of your Units require assessment to be completed the work placement: CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander cultural safety, CHCEDS045 Support Students' Maths Learning, CHCEDS052 Deliver elements of teaching and learning programs and CHCEDS046 Support Students' Literacy Learning. 

You will participate in workplacement in a regulated educational organisation to gain on the job experience. You will be supported in organising your workplacement by the RMIT workplacement facilitator and relevant teachers. You will be required to complete relevant workplacement documentation e.g. Work Integrated Learning Agreements and Working With Childrens Check (WWCC) documentation before you commence your workplacement. Your workplacement facilitator and relevant teachers will assist you with the documentation at the commencement of the program. You will need to complete 72 hours across 12 days in the second semester of your program. 

Entry Requirement for WIL:

Immunisation requirements – If placement is undertaken in Specialist Schools, Students will be required to meet the immunisation requirements as is required by DET for workers in Specialist schools

Program transition plan

This is an equivalent program to C5383 22451VIC Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation. Students 

Students who are enrolled in this program and complete all the requirements by 31 July, 2023 will graduate with the current qualification. Students who do not complete by 31 July 2023 will be transitioned into the new program 22602VIC. They will receive communications about the process and a new study plan will be devised.
