Approach to learning and assessment

The following teaching and learning approaches will be used to achieve graduate outcomes designed into this program.You will:

  • Be offered an interactive teaching and learning environment. In addition to lectures and tutorials, course contents will be illustrated, where possible, with practical workshops, demonstrations, simulations and industrial examples.
  • Have workshop practice involving the design and manufacture of parts and components.
  • Have laboratory work to enhance your technical skills.  You will gain exposure to a range of equipment and learn experimental techniques.
  • Be encouraged to participate in group discussions to broaden your ideas and team work skills to solve technical and management problems.
  • Enhance your professional knowledge through problem solving and simulating the professional work environment as much as possible.
  • Work on various projects and prepare industry standard professional reports.
  • Learn project planning and management skills.
  • Have assignments and projects which provide you with opportunities to develop specified capabilities and also to demonstrate your capabilities. 
  • Have the opportunity to take Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities which are closely linked to industry and real workplace scenarios.
  • Have assessment work which will enhance your theoretical and practical skills.
  • Be assessed on the basis of your technical and theoretical knowledge to see if you have achieved the required competencies.
  • Be able to access course information and learning materials through MyRMIT.

To ensure that you have achieved the required competencies and developed critical capabilities you must be assessed.  Assessment is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your competencies. You will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, as the assessment you receive must be appropriate to the objectives of each course.

The assessment you receive is critical to the success of your Diploma / Advanced Diploma program and to your future success in the workplace.  The Graduate Capabilities designed into your program (a pre-requisite for your success) are satisfied only if the Competencies specified for each course are achieved accordingly. Assessment does this, and because of the different types of courses may take on different forms, such as:

  • Examinations: An individual form of assessment where you have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to explain fundamental principles and solve problems.
  • Assignment and projects: May be done individually or in groups. This method may also be used to enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team.
  • Assessed tutorials: A form of in-class test, which may be done individually or as a team.
  • Laboratory reports: Provide an exercise in experimentation, report writing and critical analysis and presentation of data.
  • b Demonstrate that you are able to report a significant project, from the planning phases right through to completion where conclusions and recommendations are made.
  • Manufacture of parts or tooling: May be assessed against design drawings to ensure parts are made to the specified tolerances and requirements of the design.

The assessment you receive will enable your lecturers to provide you with feedback on your strong and weak points.  This will enable you to improve your study skills and performance as a lifelong learner in the future.

Work integrated learning
