Approach to learning and assessment

The learning philosophy in Foundation Studies is focussed on preparing you for a seamless transition into a range of higher education programs. It develops a mix of discipline knowledge, academic English and study skills in a supportive, flexible and learner-centred environment. It aims to assist you to become an independent, critical and lifelong learner and to maximise your potential for success in an Australian university context.  The classroom environment is based on the idea of a partnership between teacher and student.  You are encouraged to work closely with your teachers, and seek advice about course content and assessment and study methods.  The program has also been developed to provide you with a range of experiences that allow you to explore your interests and options for further study.  These are designed to help you make an informed choice about the area of study and the program you wish to undertake after completing Foundation Studies.

Much of your learning will involve face-to face delivery in the classroom and may include lectures, workshops, studio-based activities, tutorials, and group work.  In art and design based courses, field trips and site visits may also be undertaken.  Some science courses will involve laboratory activities.

You will undertake a range of learning activities such as problem based projects, group work, independent and group research, case studies, class discussions and reflective practise.  Art and design based courses may involve design briefs as well as gallery and site visits.  Science courses may involve laboratory activities.

The purpose of assessment in Foundation Studies is to assist you and your teachers to monitor your development and support your ongoing learning.  Assessment will be ongoing throughout the program with regular tasks giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of recent subject matter.  Feedback will be provided following each assessment to assist you to monitor your progress and continuously improve.  There will be an examination or major assessment task at the end of each course requiring you to demonstrate and apply what you have learned during the semester.

Assessment tasks are developed to prepare you for the types of assessment you are likely to encounter in your future studies. In some instances, academics from pathway programs have had input into the development of Foundation Studies assessment tasks to ensure this is the case. These tasks are designed to perpare you with a range of skills and knoweldge to help you to succeed at university level.

You will produce different types of assessment items such as projects, assignments, essays, group assignments, research reports, tests, presentations, portfolios, and examination papers. Some streams have specific types of assessment items. For instance, in art and design based courses you may produce design projects, drawings, models, gallery reviews and visual diaries; or you may produce laboratory reports in science courses.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.
