Purpose of the Program

The central objective of the program is to prepare you, as potential engineering managers and directors, for leadership roles in the management of engineering and technology-based organisations. Accordingly, you will be expected to demonstrate that you can meet the increasing demands by industry, government and the community for knowledgeable, creative and responsible leadership. 

In order to achieve this, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the many facets of contemporary management and the impact of new technology and technological change on engineering and technology based organisations. You will be exposed to real-world issues, problems and opportunities in areas such as: risk and feasibility studies, managing innovation, systems thinking, quality management, environmental management systems, strategic planning, economic environments, performance management, international issues and technology management.

The program requires in-person attendance, but also takes advantage of the capabilities of an online learning management system that is available to all students and provides scope for collaboration and remote access.

In this program you will undertake a capstone project in the 24 credit point course AERO2575 Master's Minor Research Project. In this project you will consolidate and expand the knowledge gained throughout the program through an in-depth experimental and/or analytical study of a highly technical and/or engineering management application.

Articulation and pathways

All students admitted will be exempted from completing 48 credit points, and will be required to complete eleven (11) courses (144 credit points) in order to qualify for the degree. The specific courses exempted are detailed in the Program Structure section, and the entrance requirements to qualify for admission (and hence the 48 credit points of exemption) are specified in the Entrance Requirements section of this program guide.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Credit.

A prior postgraduate qualification in Engineering or Busines (such as a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma etc.) may also provide you with exemptions depending on the exact nature of the courses studied.

Upon completion of any 96 credit points of courses you will be eligible to exit the program with the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Management. This excludes any courses awarded as credit (exempted). 

Upon successful completion of the Master of Engineering you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements. More specifically, you may be eligible to undertake further studies in Postgraduate Research Programs or further study at the PhD level.

Entrance requirements

Program Entry Requirements

An Australian Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Engineering Science or Bachelor of Engineering, at AQF8 level or equivalent, in any engineering discipline, or a Bachelor of Business, at AQF8 level or equivalent, in any business discipline, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of equal to or greater than 2.0 out of 4.0. Applicants with a GPA less than 2.0 out of 4.0 may be considered on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to at least two years' relevant work experience in engineering or business; or

An Australian Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Engineering Science or Bachelor of Engineering, at AQF7 level or equivalent, in any engineering discipline, or a Bachelor of Business, at AQF7 level, or equivalent, in any business discipline, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of equal to or greater than 2.0 out of 4.0. AND at least two years' relevant work experience in engineering or business. Applicants with a GPA less than 2.0 out of 4.0 may be considered on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to at least two years' relevant work experience in engineering or business; or

An Australian Master of Engineering, Master of Business or PhD, or equivalent, in any engineering or business discipline.

International qualifications are assessed for equivalence with the above Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications.

English Language Requirements

International applicants: A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

Engineers Australia is the national authority representing engineers in Australia. Under the Washington Accord, international recognition is offered by countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, Hong Kong (SAR), New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. Engineers Australia is responsible for the accreditation of undergraduate engineering programs. Accreditation ensures academic institutions consistently meet national and international standards.

The current policy of Engineers Australia is to admit engineering graduates based on their attainment of Stage 1 Competency Standards to membership at the relevant career grade, and allow reciprocal privileges by equivalent professional bodies overseas. Stage 1 Competency Standards may be attained through an appropriate undergraduate program, or through a recognised Master of Engineering program designed specifically for entry to engineering practice.

In general, Engineers Australia does not accredit postgraduate programs such as this one. However, you can be admitted to membership of Engineers Australia as:

  • A graduate from an accredited undergraduate program. The career grade and discipline will depend on your undergraduate degree; or
  • A graduate from a non-accredited degree and completing a competency report. The career grade and discipline will depend on your undergraduate degree; or
  • An experienced engineering professional. The career grade and discipline will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.
