Purpose of the Program

The main objective of the Master of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering) program is to develop advanced knowledge and skills in robotics and mechatronics that will enhance your career prospects in the relevant industries.  The program aims to provide you with skills to step up as project leaders, consultants and managers with the knowledge and skills to lead the introduction of new technologies and operating practices in manufacturing oriented businesses. 

You will gain state of the art knowledge and skills in robotics and mechatroics engineering and related technologies, combined with advanced oral and written communication, teamwork, design, project management and research skills.

At the completion of the program you will be equipped to further your career aspirations in manufacturing engineering, operations, or consultancy in fields like manufacturing, automotive, petrochemical, mineral processing, bio-processing etc, as:

  • R&D leader introducing new technologies and research and development
  • Team Leader implementing operational strategies
  • Operations Manager responsible for the competitive performance of a business unit.
  • Consultant providing specialist technical advice to industry.

Articulation and pathways

If you have completed a Bachelor of Engineering program in Robotics or Mechatronics Engineering, at AQF level 8 or equivalent, you may be eligible to receive up to 96 credit points of advanced standing into the program.

Entrance requirements

Program Entry Requirements

A bachelor degree in engineering, engineering science, or engineering technology (or equivalent qualification) with a major study in one or more of the following relevant engineering disciplines: mechanical, manufacturing, mechatronics, electrical and electronics, sustainable systems, aerospace, automotive, or an equivalent area of study;

OR

A Master of Engineering by coursework in one of the relevant disciplines listed above.

Applicants must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) equal to or greater than 2.5 out of 4.0. However applicants who have a GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 and also a minimum of two years' relevant work experience will also be considered.

International qualifications are assessed according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

English Language Requirements

International applicants: A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

Local applicants with international qualifications: If your international bachelor degree was not taught in English you must undertake an IELTS test and achieve a score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

Engineers Australia is the national authority representing engineers in Australia. Under the Washington Accord of which Australia is a signatory of the international agreement, recognition of professional engineer’s status is offered by countries including USA, United Kingdom, Hong Kong (SAR), New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and others. Engineers Australia is responsible for the accreditation of engineering programs that leads to the professional engineer’s qualification. Accreditation ensures academic institutions consistently meet national and international benchmarks. For Further information visit: www.washingtonaccord.org 

This program does not yet have accreditation by Engineers Australia. However, accreditation will be sought for this program as soon as it is feasible to do so within the accreditation time lines set by Engineers Australia. Once fully accredited, graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia.

Industry Links 

This program has strong links with the industry through its Program Advisory Committees, research and teaching collaborations. Many of the teaching staff within the program are from local industry or have extensive previous industry experiences, well developed contact networks, who currently engaged with many industry funded research projects. These attributes ensure, when integrated in to teaching and courseware development, that your learning experience is industry relevant and work-integrated. The Research Project which is undertaken in the second year of the Master degree provides opportunities for Work Integrated Learning through industry-based projects.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
