The Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) program takes an holistic approach to learning and assessment. You will develop capability through direct project work and integrating special areas of study. The educational philosophy of this program is to create agency, autonomy, flexibility and self-determination to ensure that you have a high quality learning experience and to help you develop activated professional networks in industry, government and community.
Our courses ensure that your assessment tasks are authentic and that you will develop the appropriate research skills required for an art in public space career. Some projects and opportunities are developed as block or intensive activities. Combining both small group and individual practice and encouraging collaborative feedback, you will learn in a cohesive and supportive environment. You are also able to participate in specialist seminars, master classes and workshops.
The Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) program has a strong international focus, supported by projects undertaken both locally and overseas. The flexible structure of the program allows you to follow your professioanl needs and/or interests so that you can develop clear employment pathways upon graduation.
You will have access to a dedicated studio space for your public art practice. Program lecturers are leaders in their fields, and you will have access to on-site projects that are developed with government, community organisations and industry partners.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:
- undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
- interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
- complete these activities in real work contexts or situations.
These interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning. Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated in a workplace environment. The work integrated learning courses specified for this program are:
VART3420 Art in Public Space Studio 1
VART3722 Art in Public Space Studio 4
In these courses you will undertake project work as the principle method for integrated learning. Projects can be simulated or real depending on interest and available opportunities. You will receive feedback from industry representatives about your work.
When available, some optional courses also offer WIL opportunities.

Program transition plan
MC281 Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) has been discontinued. The last intake into this program was Semester 2, 2023 (domestic students) and Semester 1, 2024 (international pathway students).
If you are a current student, you will remain in the Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) and will have until the end of Semester 1, 2027 to complete your program. You will be provided with detailed enrolment advice to support completion of the program in the teach out period. Please note that any Leave of Absence requests whilst enrolled in your current program plan may not be approved whilst your program plan is in teach-out.
During the teach-out period, you may choose to exit with GD070/GD070 Graduate Diploma in Art in Public Space or GC045/GC045 Graduate Certificate in Art in Public Space, subject to meeting the requirements of the award.
If you are unable to complete your program by the end of Semester 1 2027, you may consider applying to another program within RMIT subject to entrance requirements.
