Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge to undertake carding operations to process fibres for spinning operations or non-woven web forming operations.

Element:

1 Set up machine and load fibre

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Production specifications are checked to identify requirements for carding.
1.2 Raw fibres are received and set up for loading into feed sheet.
1.3 Carding machine is set for operation.
1.4 Non-conforming materials are reported.
1.5 Area around machine is cleaned during and on completion of setting
and loading.

2 Operate and monitor carding machine

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Carding machine is started and stopped according to manufacturer requirements and OHS practices.
2.2 Machine and equipment is monitored to ensure correct operation.
2.3 Blending is monitored to ensure blending consistency and feed uniformity.
2.4 Carding operation is monitored to ensure correct feed rate and quality of web offtake.
2.5 Waste is sorted.
2.6 Environmental requirements and procedures concerned with waste, pollution and recycling of materials are correctly applied at all stages of the process.
2.7 Minor product process and machine faults are identified and corrected where necessary to meet specified requirements.
2.8 Major machine faults are reported.

3 Remove carded fibres from machine

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Carded fibres are checked against quality standards.
3.2 Carded fibres are unloaded or removed according to manufacturer specifications and workplace practices.
3.3 Carded fibres are sent for despatch or further processing.
3.4 Area is cleaned to ensure work environment is maintained in a safe
and productive manner.

4.1 Production records and other documentation are accurately completed


Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course you will be able to set up the machine and load fibre, operate and monitor the carding machine, remove carded fibres from the machine and finally complete the records.


Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 5 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Complete manuals 4 hours
4. Supervised skill development to competency 40 hours
5. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be in the form of observation of your ability to set up the machine and load fibre, operate and monitor the carding machine, remove carded fibres from the machine and finally complete the records. Also by questioning for underpinning knowledge.

You will be assessed by observation as you deomstrate the ability to set up the machine and load fibre, operate and monitor the carding machine, remove carded fibres from the machine and finally complete the records (you can check the performance criteria above for more details of these skills). You will be questioned for underpinning knowledge for all these operations.
