Course Description

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to perform spotting techniques on articles received for dry cleaning. It includes identifying a wide range of stains on a variety of fabrics, determining spotting requirements and suitable spotting agents, and carrying out spotting procedures.

1. Identify spotting agents

2. Identify stain

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Procedures for identifying the type of stain are followed
2.2Type of stain and its characteristics are correctly identified


3. Determine spotting requirements

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Special fabrics are identified
3.2Fabric requirements are determined prior to selection of spotting agent
3.3Appropriate spotting agent is identified according to stain characteristic and fabric requirements
3.4Spotting requirements for common stains are identified and appropriate method selected
3.5Advanced spotting processes and procedures are considered and appropriate method selected
3.6 Information is sought to support skill development when stains or spotting techniques are difficult to identify


4. Prepare to carry out spotting procedure

4.4Spotting agents are prepared and mixed according to manufacturer instructions, workplace procedures and OHS practices


5. Carry out spotting procedure

5.1 Fabrics or materials are handled according to fabric
5.2Machine or equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer instructions, workplace procedures and OHS practices
5.3Spotting technique is applied correctly in accordance with workplace procedures and spotting agent directions
5.4Article is dried correctly
5.5Article is hung or stored correctly, labelled, and taken to the correct area for dry cleaning
5.6 Relevant documentation is completed

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to Identify stains on articles, identify and understand the uses of spotting agents, determine spotting requirements and carry out spotting procedures using the equipment in a dry cleaning enterprise.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.
