Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to develop, refine and communicate concepts for a range of writing projects

1. Develop concept

Performance Criteria:

1.1Identify relevant source material for concept development according to nature and direction of work
1.2Source and extract key information to inform concept development
1.3Where appropriate, organise collected information in a manner which assists in the development of the concept
1.4Evaluate information and ideas to develop possible approaches to work
1.5Select final option for the concept based on evaluation and refinement of approaches and the desired outcome for the work


2. Refine concept  

Performance Criteria:

2.1Identify which aspects of the concept and concept development should be communicated, based on nature and purpose of work
2.2Identify those to whom concept for work should be communicated, based on nature and purpose of work
2.3Assess a range of communication methods and select most appropriate based on nature and purpose of work
2.4Communicate the concept and its development in a manner which facilitates understanding by others
2.5Seek feedback on concept and provide clarification when required


3. Communicate concept                        

Performance Criteria:

3.1Undertake own review of concept and challenge ideas and approaches taken
3.2Seek input and comments from others about the concept
3.3Re-evaluate options for the concept based on own review and feedback, and refine accordingly

Develop, refine and communicate concept for own work is delivered and assessed within your Produce Writing specialisations. For example, you discuss the skills required to develop, refine and communicate a concept within the context of writing a novel, creating a desk-top publishing project, writing a feature article etc.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment includes the completion of a written exercise and demonstration of competency through assessment in your chosen writing specialisations.

Assessment Tasks

This unit is assessed through a preliminary exercise specific to this competency.  This exercise will be e-mailed to  you by the unit coordinator with directions on how to submit the assessment. The assessment is due by April 11.

The unit is also assessed within your writing specialisation assessment by your writing teachers. Successful completion of the assessment will demonstrate competency in developing, refining and communicating a concept within the context of that writing specialisation.   See Produce Writing course guide for assessment details.

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete all assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment.
