This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to work with and for young people within an ethical, social, political and economic context.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 In all actions and decisions, take into account the culture of the young person
2.2 Consider cultural sensitivities in communication techniques and adapt style and language to accommodate different cultural values and practices
2.3 Evaluate issues in relation to young person's culture, family background and interest and modify approach appropriately
2.4 Select activities and resources to promote cross cultural awareness
2.5 Establish guidelines that are relevant to the culture and background of the young person

1.1 Conduct interactions with young people in a fair, just, humane and positive manner

Details of Learning Activities

This unit will apply to community services work in a range of contexts involving young people.

Classes are held throughout the academic year, at the beginning and towards the end.  This will help the student to consolidate their learning, both in the classroom and during their 240 hours of work placement.

Teaching Schedule

Classes awill be held throughout the academic year. During this time students will participate in a variety of learning experiences designed to consolidate their learning.  Actitivies will be class-based and some assessment tasks will be set to be submitted after the scheduled class times.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks are directly linked to the competency through class-based assesement tasks and work placement of 240 hours.

Assessment Tasks

Studntes will be asked to partiicpate in a number of class-based assessment tasks including a group presentation, scenarios/simulations, class discussions and written and/or oral tasks.
