Course Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and
knowledge required to manage a patient record system
within a medical environment and to supervise others. It
covers clarifying roles and responsibilities, managing the
operation of a patient records system, and reviewing and
improving the system.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification
requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.
This unit applies to individuals managing an existing
record keeping system (and sub systems within the overall
system) in a medical context. It may involve supervising
the work of other personnel who implement the system
and maintain patient records day to day. It also involves
working with users of the system such as the health
practitioners in the facility.
The unit does not cover the design of a new system but
does cover reviews and improvements to an existing
system.

Details of Learning Activities
Students attend tutorials at RMIT, access myRMIT Studies and gain experience at the front desk of a dental practice in order to complete the BSBMED401A Leaner Guide, complete the written assessment and oral presentation.
The classes are a combination of PPT, class discussion and class activities.

Students are strongly encouraged to use a variety of texts and websites to support their underpinning skills and knowledge for a successful outcome in this unit of competency, including myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard).

Attendance and participation to all classes as scheduled in the student’s RMIT Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Practice Administration) Timetable.
This unit of competency is delivered against current industry standards. Students are required to support learning outcomes for the unit BSBMED301B with work based experience and further self-managed research to support positive outcome is this unit. A student may feel it necessary to seek further experience from dental practices outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit BSBMED301B.
The Learner Guide is available to all students enrolled in this unit of competency for access via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard). Students are strongly encouraged to complete that Learner Guide in detail as it will support the development of skills and knowledge in this unit and will assist the student with the associated written and workplace tasks. The Learner Guide is aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction.

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:
Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit BSBMED301B. This will result in the non-completion of the unit requiring re-enrolment incurring fees, return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment. This may result in non-completion of the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting Program.
