Course Description

Course Description: To provide learners with training in:
• complex sewing machine operations. In addition to plain machine and the overlocker activities have been designed to assist learners obtain skills in the correct operation of different machine types such as the blind hem, button-hole machines. Work pieces will provide learners with practice in the construction of garment parts that may involve details such as pleats and tucks.
• skill and knowledge in following procedure to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in relation to sewing machine operations
• the application of quality standards used in the manufacture of clothing.


Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Pre-requisites Production 2
To complete Follow defined OH&S policies and Procedures, as applied to sewing machine operations, learners also need to finish Production 1 and Production 2.

Overview of Assessment

Overview of Assessment:
Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Follow correct Occupational Health and Safety procedures by setting up and doing work according to safety standards
2. Thread, adjust, test and safely operate at least 4 different machine types and a overlock machine to produce test and specified work-pieces according to specifications and quality standards
3. Efficiently position and construct complex garment pieces according to given samples and quality standards.
4. Explain how various complex sewing machine processes could de used for different situations or situations (by means of oral or written test and practical activities).
5. Investigate and report on the causes of faults by completing appropriate report work
6. Recommend suitable action on how to fix garment faults (according to given procedures).
7. Explain the roles of the Health and Safety Representative and Safety Committee and the purpose of WorkCover (by means of oral or written tests)
Assessment time line: Progressive assessments plus a unit test on completion
