Course Description

This unit incorporates the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) guidelines for occupational health and safety. It encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes to maintain a safe work environment for staff, customers and others.
It involves observing basic safety and emergency procedures.
Expand upon existing skills to enable you to design and manufacture props for the retail, exhibition, event and advertising industries.
Ongoing observation of appropriate occupational and safety procedures, relevant to materials machinery and the working environment ,appropriate clothing and footwear.

Fire and emergency procedures, including store evacuation, are followed in accordance with store policy and relevant State and Territory legislation.

Designated personnel responsible for first aid and evacuation procedures identified correctly.

Safety alarms identified accurately.

Performance Criteria:

Procedures to achieve a safe working environment followed and maintained in accordance with all relevant occupational health and safety legislation, including codes of practice, relating to particular hazards in the workplace or industry.

Unsafe work practices, including faulty equipment and plant are followed and reported according to store policy.

Dangerous goods and substances managed in accordance with store policy and relevant State and Territory legislation.

Tasks identified for potential manual risks and managed according to store policy.

Reporting of work related incidents and accidents to designated personnel observed. 

Consultative processes for occupational health and safety demonstrated and procedures followed.

Details of Learning Activities

On your timetable this competency will be referred to as Studio 2.
This competency is delivered and assessed with MKTG 5704C and OHTH 5088C

In this unit you will undertake further development, and to expand upon existing skills to enable you to design and manufacture props for the retail, exhibition, event and advertising industries.
These 2D and 3D props will be finished to a professional standard suitable for industry/commercial applications.
Ongoing observation of appropriate occupational and safety procedures, relevant to materials machinery and the working environment ,appropriate clothing and footwear.
Exclusion from production area will apply if appropriate footwear ,and acceptable clothing is not adhered to.
Activities could include.
The manufacture of timber frames and screens.
The use of the vacuum forming process.
Appropriate materials selection in response to a brief.
Produce a range of products which demonstrate the application of design processes to 3 dimensional work.


Teaching Schedule

 SEMESTER 1

WEEKCLASS CONTENT
1Introduction to, & explanation of individual job briefs.
O.H.S. issues. Brief 1.
Preparation and rejuvenation of existing frames and recovering frames with canvas.
Preparation of 2D and 3D surfaces for painting faux finishes.
2Preparation of 2 small canvases for painting faux finishes.
3Preparation background treatments, begin faux finishes and Trompe”
4Trompe” and faux finishes should be completed today.
5Preparation of large canvas for fashion illustration,50’s style.
6Produce the frame base and stretch canvas, prime canvas.
7Apply background finishes and begin illustration.
8Ongoing production of fashion illustration.
9All 3 canvases must be completed today.
10Brief 2. Students will select an Artist or Designer and use that designers/artists style to produce a design for a 3 panel screen.
Students will be given specific dimensions and various locations in which the screen may be used.
The screen will be used with Homewares.
11Ongoing production and manufacture, various techniques will be discussed and demonstrated, vacuum forming , etc.
12Various materials and their application will vary, dependant on the design influence., screen should be finished today.
13Brief 3..Working from previously produced designs from , Design for Merchandise ,students will produce point of sale and merchandisers to a given scale.
14Working to scale, material usage, adhesives ,construction methods.
15Ongoing production,apply finishes.
16Ongoing production.
17All work must be complete today.

SEMESTER 2
 WEEK CLASS CONTENT
1 O.H.S. units OHTH 5087 and OHTH 5088 are included in this course . Students will engage in the necessary activities to realize the installation of Open Day, and the ongoing preparation for interior windows , and showcases . Students will have been briefed in V.M.P. for all studio requirements. All props and studio activities are in direct support of V.M.P.2.
