Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to join dental alloys using thermal processes
All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy

Performance Criteria:

1. Solder components
1.1 Identify and position component materials accurately to comply with the design and in a manner that enables the optimum join to be made
1.2 Select appropriate solder and flux according to the component materials
1.3 Select appropriate heating methods
1.4 Apply and control solder
1.5 Evaluate each finished join
1.6 Clean, trim, shape and finish components to produce a smooth surface free of sharp edges and irregularities
2. Weld components
2.1 Identify and position component materials accurately to comply with the design and in a manner that enables the optimum join to be made
2.2 Select appropriate welding techniques and equipment
2.3 Weld components
2.4 Evaluate each finished weld
2.5 Clean, trim, shape and finish components to produce a smooth surface free of sharp edges and irregularities


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course the participants will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the process involved in join alloy structures.

Overview of Assessment

This unit is to be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.
Practical exercises, presentation of competency assessment exercises & written tests are used.


Assessment Tasks

Practical exercises:

  1. Hawley/ Expansion Retainer & Soldering Orthodontic Appliance\
  2. Cast Partial Co/Cr Addition, Laser Weld & Self Cure

Assessment guidelines for the practical exercises, as outlined in the practical exercise book.

Theoretical examination

Join Alloy Structures

One element of the 3 hour exam (divided into competencies) PASS MARK 60%, If ’NYC’ (Not Yet Competent) result is achieved the student will be provided with detailed feedback of the shortcomings and given a further opportunity to sit a secondary exam.

If a grade of 40% or less is achieved the student will NOT be granted an opportunity to sit a secondary exam and the student will be required to re-enroll in the unit which will be incurr fees.

Please note: A subsequent NYC result for any of above mentioned assessments may require the student to attend further class work within their enrolment period or may result in the student re-enrolling in the unit which will be incurring fees.
