Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to prepare 3D models for production using current 3D software that shows an integration of appropriate elements within an aesthetically unified design.

1 Clarify work requirements

Performance Criteria:

1.1 With reference to production documentation, determine requirements and purpose for 3D
Digital environments.
1.2 In consultation with relevant personnel, determine work flow sequences to ensure that
Production schedule deadlines are met.
1.3 Select software that best suits the type of production and delivery platform for which 3D
Digital environments are being created.
1.4 Gather and analyse reference materials to help with visualisation of 3D environments


Element:

2 Prepare 3D models.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Build and modify shaders to achieve required outcome.
2.2 Apply texture coordinates or UV mapping as required.
2.3 Paint required texture maps.
2.4 Use appropriate lighting techniques to light the 3D models as required.
2.5 Rig 3D models as required, ensuring that controls are logical and easy to use, and that
rigs are robust and perform to specifications.
2.6 Set up model deformations as required.
2.7 Use scripting language as required to enhance the functionality of rigs.
2.8 Create morph targets or blend shapes as required.

Element:

3 Finalise 3D digital models

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Test models to identify faults, and adjust as required.
3.2 Submit final models to relevant personnel by agreed deadlines.
3.3 Make back-up copies in accordance with enterprise procedures.
3.4 Complete workplace documentation as required.
3.5 Render final models as required.
3.6 Review process of constructing 3D digital models and note areas for future improvement

Overview of Assessment

Animation project: The project for semester 2 centres on the setting up of a character model to be animated. This character will be the final realization of the model from semester 1: Create 3D Digital Models.


 


Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either ungraded or graded. Ungraded tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered as essential building blocks for more substantial (graded) assessment task

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive verbal feedback on all assessment from either your teacher or peers (fellow students)

Formative Assessment (Ungraded) tasks

Please note that formative (ungraded) assessment is compulsory and NOT optional
Students are required to complete ALL formative assignments to be eligible for the final Summative (graded) assessment


Assignment 1: Design& Research
Develop a presentation that will aid in the visualization of your character
(refer to assignment brief for further details)

Submission date: 18/07/11 (Week 3)


Assignment 2: Rig set-up
Using Maya software, set-up a 3D character rig of your adapted model
(refer to assignment brief for further details)

Submission date: 15/08/11 (Week 7)



Assignment 3: Binding & Deformation
Using Maya blend-shapes , binding & deformation techniques, ‘attach’ your model to your completed rig
(refer to assignment brief for further details)

Submission date: 12/09/11 (Week 10)
Summative Assessment (graded) tasks

Assignment 4: Animation set up (Part A)
Using Maya software Set-up a 3D Character model within the environment of your semester 1 stage set.
(refer to assignment brief for further details)

Submission date: 24/09/11 (Week 16)

Assignment 4: Animation set up (Part B)
Create, light and arrange 3D models necessary for a compositing production.
This will be a group production that will involve 3D and video elements
(refer to assignment brief for further details)

Submission date: 24/09/11 (Week 16)


Assignment 4 will be assessed using the following grades:

CHD Competent with High Distinction
CDI Competent with Distinction
CC Competent with Credit
CAG Competent Achieved, Graded
DNS Did Not Submit for Assessment

Part B of assignment 4 (Animation set-up) will be completed as part of a joint project with ‘Design Animation & Digital visual Effects’ It will consist of a four week workshop
