Course Description

This unit involves the application of photographic styling techniques to visual merchandising arrangements.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in practical exercises, written assignments and practical projects

Assessment tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment.

Assessment Task
For this assignment you will be working with up to 2 stylists from the Diploma of Visual Merchandising.

There are three parts to the assessment task:

Part 1: Research
After you receive your assignment brief you are to research and submit a minimum of 6 images sourced from web, magazine and discussion with your teacher and stylist.

Part 2: Location Shoot
Execute location shoot during class time in the prescribed manner.
This will involve:
• Consulting your teacher.
• Working collaboratively with Stylist
• Booking equipment.
• Organising props & location.
• Executing shoot.
• Post production work.
This is to be treated as a professional assignment where you put into practice the basic requirements of thorough planning and preparation, appropriate props as required, punctuality, attention to detail, professional photo kit and professional attitude.

You are to produce one final printed image for the location shoot. You are required to liaise directly with the stylist (as per class discussion) The print and/or digital file will be supplied by the photographer. The cost of the print will be to the stylist.


Part 3. Final Report:
Produce a written report including the following:
o Record details of each contact with the photographer (meetings and phone calls).
o List location characteristics and reasons for choice.
o Prop and merchandise sourcing (Indicate the sources where these can be obtained)
o Kit items used and their applications
o Key styling requirements
o Camera data – include all equipment used.
o Complete the photographer evaluation sheet.
o A selection of 20 photos showing the range of images taken
o Outline the strengths of the final image. Suggest improvements that could be made to the image and the styling. Evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen location. Evaluate your performance and the photographer’s performance.

Your assessment is due as listed in the teacheing schedule (see above) and should include:
1. Your typed final report.
2. Digital files of the final print and a selection of original images (no more than 20)

There are two major assessment tasks for this course. Each task is 50% of the final mark.

Grades used in this unit are as follows:

Grades which apply to curriculum-based courses:
80 – 100% HD High Distinction
70 – 79% DI Distinction
60 – 69% CR Credit
50 – 59% PA Pass
Under 50% NN Fail
