Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

A pre-requisite for this course is "Produce computer-aided drawings, RMIT course code GRAP5300C.  This unit is delivered in conjuction with "Studio Practice 2".

Course Description

This unit specifies the outcomes required to use computer aided drafting (CAD) applications to produce models and documentation for interior decoration and design projects to meet client and project brief requirements

1.   Determine project requirements

Performance Criteria:

     1.1 Applicable OHS , legislative and organisational requirements
           relevant to designing with CAD applications are verified and complied
     1.2 Project brief is reviewed and confirmed
     1.3 Parameters for the project are assessed and confirmed
     1.4 Design concepts and details of design solution are examined to
           determine drawing requirements
     1.5 Sketches, drawings and materials board are analysed
     1.6 Calculations and measurements are confirmed
     1.7 Documentation requirements for the design are clarified and
     1.8 Computing equipment and suitable software is selected and prepared
           for use
     1.9 Customised template created for individual workplace


2.   Use CAD applications to produce 3D model and documentation

Performance Criteria:

     2.1 Layering strategy for project is designed, created and applied
     2.2 Architectural library is developed to acquire relevant design
     2.3 Custom designed library parts are created
     2.4 Text, line, font and dimension styles are applied
     2.5 Pan, zoom and orbit tools are used to navigate in the 2-D and 3-D
           windows within the model
     2.6 Text and notations are added to the drawing in accordance with
           drawing protocols
     2.7 Dimensions are added to the drawing in accordance with drawing
     2.8 3-D detailed suite of rooms, complete with fenestration and doors is
           produced on appropriate layers
     2.9 Advanced features of drawing tools are used to generate 3-D form


3.   Edit drawing components

Performance Criteria:

     3.1 Editing tools are used to modify drawing elements and text
     3.2 Object properties are modified changed or transferred to a different layer 


4.   Render surfaces

Performance Criteria:

     4.1 Library is used to assign materials to surfaces and objects of the model
     4.2 New material creations are explored
     4.3 Texture, transparency, luminescence and patterns are edited to achieve
           desired surface effects using shader settings
     4.4 Light fixtures are included in model and parameters adjusted to achieve
           desired effects


5.   Create 3-D views of the model

Performance Criteria:

     5.1 Isometric, two and three point perspective views are created using a
           range of camera settings and rendering techniques
     5.2 Camera or target is repositioned to provide alternate views using a
           variety of camera techniques
     5.3 Effect of natural and artificial lighting are created in 3-D space to
           achieve photo realistic awareness of the 3-D model and the effect of
           light on surfaces
     5.4 Rending time considerations are examined to achieve specific output 


6.   Plot and print for final presentations

Performance Criteria:

     6.1 Perspective views are saved and are appropriate for final media
     6.2 Appropriate views are saved to meet requirements of brief
     6.3 Page layout is created for plotting and printing
     6.4 Page layout is prepared using saved views and documentation
     6.5 2-D documentation is plotted with appropriate line weights
     6.6 Slide show presentation is prepared using saved views and


7.   Save and back up files

Performance Criteria:

     7.1 Folders and files are created to store drawing projects
     7.2 Drawings are saved and filed to allow easy access according to
           workplace documentation system
     7.3 Appropriate techniques for reducing file size are identified and
     7.4 Copies of files are backed up 

Learning Outcomes

This unit supports the attainment of skills and knowledge required for competent workplace performance in interior decoration and design operations of all sizes. It applies to the development of 2-D and 3-D drawings that incorporate all standard practice notations and drawing protocols.

This unit requires employability skills in initiative and enterprise, planning and organising and problem solving in order to determine drawing specifications to meet design brief requirements. Communication skills are used to interpret and document design information and complete drawings. Self management and learning skills are applied to gain additional information to support drawing design skills.

  • Class computers are available for preparation of working drawings
  • Internet use for dowloading of images and blocks used in drawings
  • In class "AutoCAD command" self tutorial exercises
  • Howework self paced
  • In class group and individual drawing
  • Work on single project

As assessment will involve student group interaction, it is in your interest to attend all classes.

Other Resources

  • Home computer - It is advisable that you have a computer at home on which to do homework
    (preferably a PC rather than Mac)
  • Software - AutoCAD 2011 software is available for access via RMIT for all students enrolled in the
    program. Authorisation for the software can also be sought via AutoDesk. Details will be given in
  • Authorisation - You can then receive an authorisation for the use of the software for 36 months at a
    time direct from AutoDesk (details will be supplied in first week)
  • Self paced CD rom tutorial - If you find you are struggling with AutoCAD, a recommended self
    paced CD rom is available for purchase from . The software is called
    "Introduction to AutoCAD 2011" and is available at a student discount rate
  • Building 8, level 7 - 24 hour, 7 day a week access is available to the "open labs" in building 8 if you
    require the use of a computer. Booking may be required
  • Building 94, level 5, room 13 will be available most nights after 6pm till midnight (refer to to timetable located
    on door of room).  Note, an "access" form will need to be filled in and approved prior to use of this room.
  • During the course, WMV files will be uploaded into the relevant blackboard folder for assistance

Overview of Assessment

Effectively design and produce at least two 2-D CAD drawings and two 3-D CAD drawings that document the requirements of the design brief

Apply drafting and drawing protocols in accordance with Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia

Effectively apply design elements and principles to designing with CAD applications

Comply with legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices and procedures to design with CAD applications

Communicate effectively and work safely with others in the work area

Assessment Tasks

During week 1 to 15, you will be required to:

  • Ensure you have AutoCAD loaded at home for "self directed learning"
  • You will be required to "check measure" a building on site - you will be supplied with a drawing
  • Produce a set of "working drawings" as briefed in "studio practice 2"
  • Produce a 3D building, with walls, windows, doors, floor, ceiling, furniture, materials and lights
  • Save numerous views within the building
  • Render these view
  • Produce a board with rendered view(s)

In order ensure good progress and provide timely feedback, there will be a number of submissions at
different stages required throughout the semester of this project.

Other Information

All tasks are required to be submitted by the due date as briefed by your teacher.  In the event that you suspect
that you cannot meet a submission date or time, fill out and sign an "extension of time for submission of
assessable work" form to yourteacher by no later than 24 hours prior to the due date & time (as briefed).

The "extension of time" claim will then be assessed based on "eligibility criteria" as listed on the rear
of the form." This includes serious illness, bereavement or hardship.
