Course Description

This unit covers skills and knowledge required to negotiate and make informed decisions when accepting or declining a translation or an interpreting assignment in terms of terms and conditions, personal competence, level of preparedness, liability issues and recording keeping.

This unit will be taught in a cluster with the following units:

1. Collect and assess assignment information.

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Clarify the scope of assignments with clients, including languages, terms and conditions, and any specific requirements.
1.2. Analyse background information for details of the nature and conditions of assignments.
1.3. Provide information to clients on terms, conditions and conventions to reach an agreed approach.
1.4. Identify performance expectations and their implications for undertaking the assignment.


2. Assess ability to complete assignment.

2.1. Evaluate personal competence and preparedness to satisfy assignment requirements and areas for negotiation with clients.
2.2. Identify and assess limits and responsibility, and their implications.

Students will participate in various learning activities, including: lectures, tutorials, practical demonstrations, class discussions, group/individual work, presentations and site observation.

Week 2 - Social ethics and professional ethics, ethics for interpreters
Week 3 - Code of Ethics
Week 4 - Underpinning knowledge check. Introduction to Agency Work. 
Week 5 - Feed back on knowledge test. Practicalities and preparations for agency work. Introduce current trends to monitor.
Week 6 - Guest Speaker will speak about professional judgments and issues in agency assignments.
Week 7 - Developing a work plan. OH&S issues in Interpreting.
Week 8 - Introduction to working with clients directly.
Week 9 -  Negotiating terms with direct clients. Preparing for work coming directly from the client. Assessment Task 2 assigned.
Week 10 - Working as a team. Deciding roles within assignments and sharing knowledge. Assessm
Week 11 - Guest lecture on work with direct clients.
Week 12 - Discussion of ethical and professional judgments in direct client work
Week 13 - Developing a workplan. OH&S issues in interpreting.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

Assessment tasks my include, but not limited to, the following:

  • teacher directed group activities
  • practical exercises
  • group discussions
  • evidence of correspondence where assignments, conditions were clarified, negotiated
  • practical demonstration of understanding of contractual documentation from the industry

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Ongoing class observation via checklist

Assessment Task 2: Students will complete a report  on  a simulated interpreting assignment (suggested topics will be provided by the teacher) and then write a report responding to the compentency elements. In preparing the report, the student may consult practitioners, other professionals, colleagues and fellow students. A template for the report will be provided by the teacher.  This task will be used for grading purposes.

 Assessment Task 3: Practical demonstration. This will be incorporated to the interpreting assessment. Students are expected to demostrate preparation for the interpreting tasks as per the relevant unit elements above. This task will be used for grading purposes.

Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.
Extensions of 7 calendar days or less:
Students seeking an extension of 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the School.
Extensions of greater than 7 working days:
