Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide competency based training in broad aerospace engineering design skills. This course encompasses elements of:
• Project management
• Client liaison
• Preliminary and other design options
• Tender documentation and procedures
• Detail and final engineering design
• Technical reporting and presentation
• Airworthiness certification processes.

Learning Outcomes


1. Produce a design and development brief of options for ‘approval to proceed’.
2. Design an aerospace engineering solution from a clients brief to involve standard and proven design techniques and to comply with airworthiness requirements.
3. Draw preliminary general arrangements, design and detail drawings.
4. Prepare a written report on the design project.
5. Present technical information orally.


Details of Learning Activities

Course Description
The purpose of this module is to provide competency based training in a broad based aerospace engineering design skills. This module encompasses elements of: Project management; client liaison; preliminary and other design options; tender documentation and procedures; detail and final engineering design; technical reporting and presentation; airworthiness certification processes.
The delivering of the course is blended modes of lectures, tutorials, lab testing, presentation and design and development of overall project.
The module facilitates articulation into Aerospace and Engineering degree courses.

Overview of Assessment

To successfully complete this course the student is required to pass written assessment tasks and demonstrate skills and ability by completing pratical tasks to aerospace standard.

Participants are required to complete all the assessment tasks to pass the course.

Assessment Item 1 (10%) Material selection and preliminary cost analysis report
Assessment Item 2 (10%): Class Presentation (Compulsory attendance for all group members)
Assessment Item 3 (70%): Written Report
Assessment Item 4 (10%): Group Peer Review Report

Grading Criteria
As all assessment items involve group work contribution, all members within the group will receive the same grade. If team members believe that a member has not contributed equally and deserves the group assessment grade, a detailed report in writing is to be submitted to the teacher by Friday 21st October 2011. No individual projects will be accepted.
