Course Description

Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to interpret the creative brief and develop and implement scene art designs for productions.

1.    Receive and interpret the brief for the scenic art design

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Liaise with the relevant personnel and interpret and confirm the scenic art requirements so that technical, production or script requirements are met

1.2 Participate in preliminary concept meetings to discuss the scenic art requirements of the production

1.3 Identify the available budget for the production

1.4 Identify the deadline for production and implementation of the scenic art design


2.    Breakdown scripts to produce scenic art plan

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Produce and maintain master script breakdown/production schedule breakdown

2.2 Identify required changes to scenic art within the script or production schedule

2.3 Determine and document the required number and types of scenic elements for the use of all relevant personnel during the design development


3.    Generate and assess ideas

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Generate a range of ideas for the scenic art design which respond sympathetically to the brief and provide creative solutions to the design issues

3.2 Discuss ideas and collaborate, as required, with relevant personnel to ensure contribution of ideas to the initial concept

3.3 Continuously reflect on and appraise ideas for implications on cost, technical feasibility, and suitability to meet the brief


4.    Conduct research and experimentation

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Research the period, style and genre of the production

4.2 Identify the historical and cultural factors that might influence scenic art styles and production techniques

4.3 Undertake research into the style and location of the production, materials and human resources necessary to fulfil the production requirements and their cost

4.1 Trial various techniques to test the suitability of their use in the final production of the scenic art elements, including:

4.1.1 colour mixes

4.1.2 textures

4.1.3 materials

4.1.4 painting styles

4.2 Organise research and experimentation material for ease of use of all relevant personnel during the design development process

4.3 Analyse and document research and experimentation findings for use during the development of the scenic art design

4.4 Evaluate the initial concepts generated, against the research and experimentation findings


5.    Develop and document the scenic art design

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Establish or maintain an accessible recording system for the use of all relevant personnel, to include:

5.1.1 specialist services available for scenic art production

5.1.2 reference/research materials

5.1.3 draft and final scenic art designs

5.1.4 performance details and specifications

5.2 Hold ongoing discussions with relevant personnel so that additional or changed production requirements and new ideas are considered and incorporated during the development of the design

5.3 Ensure that agreement is reached with relevant personnel on a consistent interpretation of period and style

5.4 Evaluate initial concepts and select the most appropriate idea, giving consideration to:

5.4.1 the budget

5.4.2 ongoing discussions

5.4.3 research findings

5.4.4 ongoing reflection on the design brief

5.5 Develop the scenic art designs from the initial concepts ensuring:

5.5.1 consistency with the style requirements of the script/production

5.5.2 that research findings are incorporated

5.5.3 that ideas are technically feasible and demonstrate awareness of parameters and resource constraints

5.5.4 that ideas demonstrate effective use of materials

5.6 Choose and incorporate the use of colour, texture and other materials

5.7 Prepare working technical production drawings, production specifications and samples

5.8 Label all designs accurately with scene/production sequence numbers


6.    Communicate design ideas and make amendments

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Present the scenic art design using a range of visual materials including:

6.1.1 coloured design illustrations

6.1.2 technical production drawings

6.1.3 material samples

6.1.4 production requirements and specifications to the relevant personnel for acceptance

6.2 Participate in the initial and ongoing evaluation of the presented designs

6.3 Negotiate and agree to additional requirements or modifications to the design and undertake any necessary amendments to the designs

6.4 Agree to the final designs and present final scenic art production specifications to all relevant personnel to ensure that scenic art meets design and other production requirements


7.    Liaise with others to implement scenic art production

Performance Criteria:

7.1 Discuss, with relevant personnel, and agree upon the future role of the designer in the realisation of the scenic art design

7.2 Liaise with relevant personnel to ensure that all scenic art production requirements are met, quality standards are adhered to and work is undertaken within item, budget and technical constraints

7.3 Participate in ongoing production meetings and participate in the evaluation of the scenic art elements produced

7.4 Ensure that any scenic art design modifications are agreed, noted and acted upon

7.5 Inform relevant personnel of scenic art design changes

7.6 Update any required documentation and record and file according to enterprise requirements

Exercise 1 - Seminar


Research the scenic art of a film of your choice and present it to the class. Focus on an element of Mise en scene and discuss the art direction of the film.

Develop scenic art for the script and include Mise en scene, lighting, camera angles and figure movement, the ambience or mood of the scene.

Develop an arts journal for a script –

- Take photographs of potential scenes, design scenes, collect material samples, list props, any special requirements and costumes.
Think about the ambience or mood of the scene and all Mise en scene.

- Research local service and materials providers - including prop builders and hire, replica weapons hire/armourers, set dressers and hire, costumes makers and hire, locations, hair and make up.
