Course Description

This unit covers setting up field control devices such as transducers, sensors, and actuators. It encompasses working safely, following design brief, applying knowledge of device operating principles, interpreting device specifications, following manufacturer’s set up specifications, testing device operation and documenting set up parameters

Performance Criteria:

1 1.1 OHS processes and procedures for a given work area are identified, obtained and understood
1.2 Established OHS risk control measures and procedures are followed in preparation for the work.
1.3 The field devices to be set up are determined from control system specifications and in consultations with relevant persons
1.4 Activities are planned to meet scheduled timelines in consultation with others involved in the work.
1.5 Tools, equipment and testing devices needed for the work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct operation and safety.

2.1 OHS risk control measures and procedures for carrying out the work are followed.
2.2 Devices are set up drawing on knowledge of field device and operation, characteristics and applications.
2.3 Devices are positioned and adjusted in accordance with their operating principles, manufacturer instructions and control system requirements.
2.4 Methods for dealing with unexpected situations are selected on the basis of safety and specified work outcomes.
2.5 Setting up devices is carried out efficiently without waste of materials or damage to apparatus and the surrounding environment or services and using sustainable energy practices.


3 3.1 OHS risk control measures and procedures for carrying out the work are followed.
3.2 Field devices are tested and final adjustments made to correct any anomalies in their operation.
3.3 Field device set up is documented in accordance with established procedures.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning and simulated work activities to demonstrate an understanding of principles of operation of transducers and sensors, including:

Work simulated practical exercises related to:
Basic cable and conductor terminations, instrumentation safe working practices. Sensor installation requirements encompassing: safety precaution for the various types of devices, connecting devices, locating, aligning and adjusting devices, principles of analog signal conditioning, digital signal conditioning

Classroom tutorial activities involving the following topics:
Measurement principles and concepts , technical standards, regulations and codes applicable to instrumentation and control. Characteristics of transducers and sensors involving: Strain sensors ,Temperature Measurement , Flow Measurement, Pressure Measurement, Level Measurement, Proximity sensors, Displacement, Location or position sensors, Light dependant resistor, LSCR, Phototransistor

Research Assignment on transducers, sensing devices and transmitters

Overview of Assessment

This course will be assessed through a range of practical exercises, assignments and progressive tests.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment task 1 (Assignment 1): 35%
Written assignment to demonstrate an understanding of flow, temperature, level and pressure measurement techniques.

Assessment task 2 (Practical exercises in simulated workplace): 30%
Setting up field control devices including:
A. Determining the field control devices to be set up
B. Positioning and adjusting devices accordance with their operating principles, manufacturer instructions and control system requirements
C. Testing field devices and making final adjustments to correct any anomalies in their operation
D. Documenting field control device set up in accordance established procedures
E. Dealing with unplanned events by drawing on essential knowledge and skills to provide appropriate solutions.
F. Show an understanding of Occupational Health and Safety.
Work performance simulation projects and laboratory exercises have to be undertaken toward the end of the unit, in a controlled environment for the specified duration in order to perform tasks autonomously and/or a member of a team .

Assessment task 3 (Test): 35%
Written assessment on concepts of measurement, definitions, range, span, hysteresis, accuracy and precision , instrument static and dynamic characteristics, control modes, basic measurement channel, sensors and transducers.
