Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to interpret in collaboration with one or more other interpreters as part of an interpreting team or in relay. You will be able to observe each other’s work and provide practical support to achieve effective communication that satisfies professional and industry standards, including occupational health and safety standards.

This unit will be delivered in a cluster with the following units:

Clarify  assignment requirements

1. Identify and confirm assignment requirements with client, including conditions of engagement, physical work environment and performance expectations.
2. Confirm attributes of team, physical work environment and performance expectations with other team members.
3. Negotiate agreed approach to achieve best quality and safest outcomes.

Prepare as a team.

4. Consult as a team to obtain background materials and establish interpreting process.
5. Analyse physical work environment and collaborate on required adjustments.
6. Seek briefing to assess linguistic requirements and address technical concerns.
7. Introduce team to discourse participants and explain role and process of interpreting.

Undertake team assignment

8. Implement agreed interpreting process and monitor time.
9. Rotate interpreting according to industry standards and in line with situation and established techniques.
10. Provide appropriate support to other team members.
11. Monitor other team members’ delivery, and prompt and feed in an appropriate manner to facilitate and enhance colleague and team performance.
12. Accept prompts and feeds in a manner that does not compromise delivery.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

The assessment tasks may include, but are not limited to:

- Practical demonstrations,

- Portfolios

- roleplays

- simulated assignments

- peer review activities

Note: these assessments will be undertaken concurrently with LANG5782

Learning Outcome 1 (50% weighting)

During weeks 5/6 and weeks 14/15 individual students will be observed performing a range of activities performed via a range of media including video, face to face and live on line. One week prior to observation the teacher will advise which particular performance criteria will be assessed and the context and topic area for testing so students will be able to prepare for assessment. The observations will be recorded on a checklist for each student and feedback will be provided to the student.

Learning Outcome 2 (50% weighting, ongoing from week 2 to week 12)

Reflective Journal. Each week students are to spend up to 1 hour writing in a journal to reflect on the theory provided and how it applies to class learning and guided activities set by the teacher each week. Students need to reflect on their sight translation skills under the performance criteria listed above. The journal will be submitted for marking at the end of week 12.

Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.
