Course Description

The course is designed for students wishing to gain an introductory understanding to financial planning and wealth creation
You will gain an understanding of major areas that need to be considered when developing a financial plan. Such important considerations include: superannuation, share investment, insurance and tax considerations impacting on an individual’s ability to create wealth.  It also considers broader subjective issues such as attitudes to risk and the timing and relevance of investment / divestment decisions throughout the life of an individual.

Financial Planning is an elective unit in the Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) degree and is open to all students.
 

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course you will have a greater awareness of key success factors that impact financial planning and wealth creation. The course will provide you with a basic understanding of the many issues that impact designing a financial plan. This course offers a firm foundation of which to build a financial planning career or alternatively as a source of information to assist in promoting personal wealth creation.

In addition, the course provides an opportunity for you to develop generic capabilities. These include the ability to:
•    Identify, understand an apply financial planning concepts
•    Make judgments and decide on appropriate treatments
•    Clearly communicate  analysis and reasoning individually and as team member
•    Gather (research) to obtain appropriate information for decision-making.

Each of these capabilities will be tested via a multitude of assessment tasks as detailed under overview of assessment

At completion of this course you will be able to
•    Identify, understand an apply financial planning concepts as they impact individual client circumstances
•    Make judgments and decide on appropriate treatment of financial issues after considering a multitude of factors such as specific individual circumstances , tax considerations and  risk preferences and life style aspirations
•    Clearly communicate  analysis and reasoning individually and as team member  various issues impacting a financial plan
•    Gather (research) to obtain appropriate information for decision-making as regard various aspects in formulating financial planning advice.
 



Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities are based on the assumption that you complete the set reading and prescribed course work. Normally this will be based around both theory and practical type questions that will be completed by you prior to attending class. This ensures that valuable discussion, extension of concepts and issues requiring clarification can be attended to in the teacher direct learning hours.

Overview of Assessment

In Financial Planning the assessment you face may be a combination of the following, depending on location:
•    an in-semester test
•    media watch report
•    project
•    group work
•    plus, all locations have a two hour end of semester exam.
 Each of the above forms of assessment  is designed to test the capabilities as detailed previously and replicated below.

Financial Planning will provide you with a basic understanding of issues that impact wealth creation that can be used personally to improve your own financial position or as a grounding to becoming a practicing financial planner.

In addition the course provides an opportunity for you to develop generic capabilities. These include the ability to:

•    Identify, understand an apply financial planning concepts as they impact individual client circumstances
•    Make judgments and decide on appropriate treatment of financial issues after considering a multitude of factors such as specific individual circumstances , tax considerations and  risk preferences and life style aspirations
•    Clearly communicate  analysis and reasoning individually and as team member  various issues impacting a financial plan
•    Gather (research) to obtain appropriate information for decision-making as regard various aspects in formulating financial planning advice.


To pass this course you must obtain an overall mark of at least 50% for whole semester.
