An understanding of the role of negotiation is a basic skill required of industrial relations and human resource practitioners. This course introduces you to the practices and processes of negotiation and will guide you to analyse and evaluate concepts associated with negotiation, including ethics, power, gender and cultural diversity. The course will build upon your understanding of negotiation and will develop your skills through preparation and participation in negotiation simulations. The development of your negotiation, advocacy and research skills will be encouraged through the opportunity to analyse your participation in negotiation exercises and the team research project. You will negotiate and advocate a policy initiative, develop advocacy strategies and interact with industry experts. You will be introduced to the practices and processes of negotiation and advocacy used in organisations. This will build on your understanding of human resource and employment relations and assist you to apply a broader purpose of negotiation. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own practice, be an active learner, and take responsibility for your learning in relation to individual and team activities.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On the successful completion of this course you will be able to:
CLO1: Evaluate and apply conceptual and practical knowledge to negotiation theory;
CLO2: Critically evaluate, and reflect upon the planning strategies and outcomes appropriate for different kinds of negotiation context;
CLO3: Identify and analyse legal, social and ethical parameters within which the parties negotiate issues;
CLO4: Demonstrate an understanding of the processes of negotiation and advocacy in terms of the role of the HR practitioner, unions and other stakeholders;
CLO5: Identify, evaluate and develop ethical, equitable, socially and culturally responsible solutions to emerging employment relations and human resource challenges;
CLO6: Effectively communicate practical and innovative solutions whilst being accountable, responsible and reflective re. individual and team learning and professionally appropriate practice.
Overview of Learning Activities
The nature and processes of negotiation and advocacy will be examined, with an emphasis being placed on skill development and practice. The course utilises an enquiry based learning approach that facilitates each activity and assessment contributing to and encouraging student critical thinking and communication skills development.
This course involves an interactive, experiential learning environment to enable you to develop practical knowledge and skills of industrial relations negotiation. Learning in this course will develop through seminars, role-plays, simulations, and use of audio-visual materials. The emphasis in this class is on both individual and group participation. As knowledge is developed formatively you need to attend all classes to confidently develop your skills. Seminars will encourage student participation through group and class discussions generated from student enquiry, readings and questions.
It should be noted that the lecturer must be notified of any planned absences for the weeks when negotiation simulations are arranged, preferably in enough time to enable rearrangement of activities that will not disadvantage other students:

Overview of Assessment
The course places emphasis on assessments being conducted in teams and maximises peer to peer collaborative learning, therefore reflecting the increased importance of team approaches to managing and resolve business challenges by real world organisations.
