Introduction to Organisational Behaviour


Course Description

The course is based around appreciating a range of management issues within a strategic management framework. The learning focuses on the interdependencies between organisations and their environments. It provides you with analytical techniques to understand the environment and links this understanding to key internal management issues including planning, structure, ethics and innovation.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The generic capabilities you will develop in this course include:

  • Make judgements about personal behaviour.
  • Contribute in culturally diverse groups.
  • Access information from a wide variety of sources, discern value and use.
  • "Read" environments, see and create opportunity for showing initiative.
  • Frame decisions and make judgements about enhancing environmental sustainability.
  • Communicate results - quantitative, qualitative, graphical and electronic texts.
  • Apply knowledge to simple and well defined problems.


On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. address the relationship between contemporary organisations and their environments;
  2. explore the influence that organisational structures and processes have on the behaviour of its members;
  3. describe and analyse the theories and models presented in the course;
  4. apply the theories and models presented in the course to contemporary organisational settings;
  5. effectively undertake written communication, group interaction and information management.


Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of activities, both individual and in groups, will be drawn on to help you achieve the learning outcomes specified above. These may include:

  • Lectures introducing concepts, models and frameworks.
  • Experiential exercises to test ideas and practice and evaluate your level of skills and knowledge.
  • Guided reading.
  • Discussion, online and/or face-to-face, providing a forum for you to exchange ideas and understanding with other students, and to debate issues relating to various theories, models and frameworks. Discussion and debate also assist in the critical evaluation of concepts presented in the course.
  • Group research and presentation provides situations for you to critically evaluating ideas in a group setting.

A recommended text and further reading will be advised.  Notes, exercises, self assessments, quizzes and links to other relevant internet sources may be provided electronically through RMIT’s online platform.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course will require you to develop reasoned solutions for complex organisational problems. This may occur through written work, formal examination and oral presentation.
