You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses ARCH1004 Architecture Design Studio 5 and ARCH1026 Architecture History 20th Century before you commence this course.

Course Description

The portfolio is the single most important document, record, and indication of the standard, competency, and interests of the individual designer/architect/student. It is locally, nationally, and internationally used for entry into design/architecture programs, postgraduate study, and for entry into the profession and private practice. The portfolio is a reconcilliation of all courses and course areas within the program, (Design Studio, Architecture Technology, Architecture Communications, and Architecture History) and is intended as a holistic means of asseessment of your achievements and reflection upon your future direction. This course provides you with a capstone experience by allowing you to reflect upon your learning achievements in the Bachelor of Architectural Design.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Learning is an interactive, participary process involving both teachers and students and the success of a class depends on the levels of input from all participants. This course will assist you in preparing and presenting your portfolio both verbally and visually. The course will be presented in the form of a studio with lectures, student presentations and critique, and class discussion. You will demonstrate through the verbal and visual presentation of the portfolio that you can consciously determine a direction for your work, and assume responsibility for your continuing education.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • display proficienciencies and skills, and understaning of work undertaken in: design, communications, technology
  • locate your design work in relation to a wider context of architectural issues and a community of practitioners 
  • make a self assessment of your architecture design studio work
  • determine a future direction of your design practice
  • evaluate your position on sustainability in the practice of architecture

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply design knowledge to solve a range of architectural problems in diverse contexts.
  • Critically analyse, evaluate and make informed judgement on a wide range of architectural problems and situations.
  • Demonstrate and articulate design skills from concept formation through to design development.
  • Integrate a body of practical and theoretical knowledge into your design process.
  • Comprehend key architectural works, cultural movements and ideas, their theoretical and cultural context and relevance to design.
  • Communicate complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written media.
  • Reflect upon your learning acheivements in design, taking repsonsibility for your future design direction and continued learning.
  • Develop an awareness of environmental factors affecting the built environment.

Overview of Learning Activities

The course is taught in studio mode supported by ancillary lectures. The mode of learning in the studio is primarily through ’practice and doing’. Characteristic of this mode of teaching is the experience of regularly verbally presenting, discussing and explaining your work in a formal critique process communicated through drawings and draft layouts of your portfolio. Your portfolio will undergo a continous cycle of reviewing, verbal feeback and reflection between staff, peers and students. At the end of the semester you will present your completed portfolio during a ten minute presentation to a panel consisting of your tutor and another member of the course teaching team.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment will be made on the basis of a complete portfolio presented at the end of semester. Final assessment will be based on the physical (visual) portfolio and its verbal presentation and defence.

You will receive formative assessment and feedback on a weekly basis from your tutor. Your work in progress will be formaly presented and reviewed at mid-semester review.
