Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Buil 1111 structures
Course Description
This course teaches structural design principles and problems in the design, planning and construction of concrete and steel buildings. The course also introduces design theory in relation to concrete frames, floor systems, footings and steel systems.
This course will review, consolidate and extend the knowledge of students into more complex structural areas. This course aims to provide a broad overview of structural building systems and alternative structural possibilities.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to design and understand simple structural building systems, and to have a broad overview of a number of basic design concepts in structural steel, concrete and structural timber. Students will be able to demonstrate an awareness of the professional skills of the structural engineer and related professionals. This course follows on from the first structures course buil1111
Capabilities
This course will enable students to practically apply the concepts, skills and knowledge in industry practice. The student will be able to undertake a simple design project that demonstrates understanding and knowledge of the structural design of materials used in construction.

5. Strategic thinking and action
An ability to:-
5.1 adopt a professional attitude to thinking through problems, evaluating alternative actions and adopting the most defensible strategy.
At the conclusion of this course, students will be familiar with building structures as per the weekly topic headings.
