ISYS1039 Business Information Systems Analysis and Design 1
Course Description
This course extends existing knowledge of the analysis and design process for developing business information systems by introducing: object-oriented techniques using the UML notation for analysis and design; requirements discovery; business process modelling; open source development methodologies; systems development team structure and dynamics; and other novel development methodologies such as the Rational Unified Process and Agile approaches to systems development.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon completion of this course, you will have:
- an understanding of the object-oriented techniques for developing a requirements model for a business information system
- an understanding of the object-oriented techniques for developing a design model for a business information system
- a knowledge of how requiremnts specifications and business process models are developed
- an understanding of the factors involved in the build/buy/outsource decision in systems development
- a knowledge of how information systems development teams can organise themselves
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- create a requirements specification for a business information system
- document business processes in an organisation for use in business information systems development
- create an object-oriented design model for a business information system
- work in a team environment to develop the above deliverables
Overview of Learning Activities
There will be one lecture and a two-hour tutorial each week during the semester. Students should attend both on a regular basis. The tutorials will contain workshops and practical exercises to augment the material covered in the lectures. This tutorial work will be subject to assessment. In addition, students are expected to carry out set major assignments for assessment purposes.

Overview of Assessment
A student in this course is required to satisfactorily complete each of the following:
Three assignments 60%
Final examination 40%
Extensions are not normally granted. However, in cases of exceptional and genuine hardship (not including inconvenience, poor planning or pressures of work) limited extensions may be given. Applications should be made in writing to the lecturer in charge of the course.
To pass this course you must achieve at least 50% of the total marks allocated to the final examination, and complete all the assessment tasks satisfactorily.
Failure to pass the final examination will result in your final examination mark being recorded as the fail grade for this course.
Methods of submission may vary from assignment to assignment (eg hardcopy, softcopy) but in any case students must retain a copy for their own safekeeping.
Penalties for late submission of assignments:
One day late - 5% deduction
Two days late - 10% deduction
Three days late - 20% deduction
Fours days late - 40% deduction
No submissions accepted more four days after due date.

HD High Distinction 80% +
DI Distinction 70% +
CR Credit 60% +
PA Pass 50% +
NN Fail < 50%
