Course Description

To provide students with knowledge and skill about the use of PCs and Local and Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs) in a business environment. This knowledge and skill will enable the student to provide business organisations with advice and assistance in the design, acquisition, administration and operation of PCs and LANs. in a Novell Netware Server based environment.

Capabilities

Upon completion of this subject, successful students will be able to:
Assist management in designing and implementing plans for the acquisition of PCs, LANs and WANs commensurate with the organization’ s strategic objectives.
Appreciate the management issues facing administrators of PCS, LANs and WANs.
Install and configure hardware and Network Operating Systems and client software on to PCs and LANs so as to optimise performance.
Basic problem solving and trouble-shooting tasks associated with the use of PCs and LANs.
Administer a small LAN and gain experience in using typical LAN administration software in a Novell Netware based environment.
To introduce students to World Wide Web services installation and management

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning is conducted by formal lectures and supervised laboratory sessions. Students will complete several computer based exercises culminating in the design, installation and management of a non-trivial industry strength Novell Netware Server network.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students enrolled in this subject have access to the Department of Business Information Technology specialist networking and operating systems laboratory on level 8 (lab #12) of building 108 (Tivoli Building). It remains the responsibility of all students enrolled in authorised subjects to ensure the integrity and security of our laboratory.

Any equipment that is identified as being faulty is to be documented and reported promptly. Procedures to be followed in the event of damage or theft will be outlined in class.

Students will be loaned a removable hard disk drive assembly comprising a removable SATA drive and caddy for use in this laboratory. This removable hard disk is to be returned at the end of semester, or a suitable replacement made.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this subject is on the basis of the satisfactory completion of a set of practical assignments and passing an end of semester written examination.

To pass this subject, students must gain a pass in each component of the assessment. All material covered in lectures and workshop sessions will be examinable.

Where practical assignments are set, students are advised that they will be asked to personally demonstrate their work to the lecturer, and it is strongly recommended that submitted work be thoroughly understood.
