Course Description

This course (GRAP1038) looks at creating microprocessor activated physically interactive objects and environments. You will become proficient in interfacing with open-source electronic prototyping platforms such as Arduino.

You will investigate the creative use of sensors that detect stimuli such as movement, light and sound and the application of program code to generate instructions for an active or reactive object, sculpture or performance.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will develop your capacity to:

  • Design technologically mediated interactions and experiences.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Employ basic electronics, including embedded microcontrollers and sensors to build interactive objects, sculptures and installations.
  2. Apply essential programming principles and procedural thinking to interaction design.
  3. Evaluate the use of appropriate software and hardware tools.
  4. Demonstrate prototyping and construction abilities that will enable you to assemble and solder hardware elements to create interactive devices.
  5. Develop active / reactive interactions through shifting information between virtual and real world environments.

In this course you will be expected to work both collaboratively and in a self directed manner to demonstrate your learning through a number of small learning activities in tutorial and workshop settings.

Your lecturer will guide you in developing a unique project that will allow you to achieve the appropriate learning outcomes for this course based on your capabilities, disciplinary focus and learning objectives.

You actively engage in researching and exploring processes, technologies and methods to allow you to realise your project objectives.

You will contribute to class critiques and receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and your peers through a variety of consultations, presentations and tutorials.
