Course Description
This course provides you with the basic knowledge and skills needed to read the cinema as a specific practice and medium.This will include an introduction to terminology, theoretical language and various tools for enabling you to analyse and contextualise specific films, critical writing and thinking about cinema. You will view a broad range of films, from the very earliest cinema to the contemporary, from Classical Hollywood to international cinema, as well as fiction, documentary and experimental films.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcome:
- Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Recognise and analyse the application of the basic elements of film ‘language’.
- Analyse passages in films to unpack the way in which meaning is constructed.
- Analyse the meanings and implications of specific artistic choices and aesthetic decisions made within films and by filmmakers.
- Discuss cinema as both a specific entity and as an heterogeneous medium.
