This course is suited to students who speak English as a second language and is recommended for those who have completed LANG1404 Advanced English 1.
Course Description
Professional English is aimed at refining and developing students’ ability to communicate effectively in English in a wide variety of professional settings and situations. This course is particularly suited to students whose mother tongue is a Language Other Than English. It will specifically support students who need a high command of written and oral English in their disciplinary field.
As this course comprises students from a variety of discipline areas, a great deal of emphasis is placed upon assisting students to identify and reflect on their own learning needs and goals. Students will be able to submit reports or present on topics that are relevant to their fields of expertise.The weekly session is broadly divided into 3 parts: theoretical presentations, hands-on practice and reflection.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Draft professional cover letters for job applications
- Be prepared for and handle job interviews successfully
- Be familiarised with written and oral communication conventions in a variety of professional settings & situations
- Deliver oral professional presentations using the appropriate tone, register and pronunciation in English
Overview of Learning Activities
A range of practical learning experiences are planned for this course including input from the lecturer, mock interviews/meetings, report writing, submissions of cover letters, group presentations and peer review activities. Students are encouraged to assess their individual needs and to set their own priorities and goals for the course. Class work will be supported by an online component to facilitate communication and to provide additional resources. The completion of weekly homework will be paramount in order to progress and achieve the goals of the course.

Overview of Assessment
You will be required to submit a range of assessments throughout the semester. Assessment tasks may involve working independently and/or as part of a pair or team on a range of written, oral and interactive tasks.
You will also receive verbal and/or written feedback from your lecturers and/or peers on your assessment tasks.
There are 4 assessment tasks, involving written assignment, oral interview, report writing, and presentation.
