Course Description

This course teaches the concepts and skills involved in creating and managing a sustainable digital repository, library or archive for an organisation. It addresses the management of digital objects over the long term through active, ongoing oversight of the total environment (content, technologies, and user expectations) during all phases of the objects’ life cycle. Underpinning themes are broader policy issues and the implications for practice in information management organisations, and long-term sustainability of the digital repository, library or archive.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The Capabilities that you will develop in this course are listed below in the Course Learning Outcomes.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Identify and apply key concepts and strategies to manage and curate the digital information and digital assets of an organisation.
  2. Identify and evaluate the environments in which digital objects are created, used, stored and preserved for present and future use.
  3. Develop policy and devise plan for archiving and preserving sustainable digital materials, taking account of key aspects including content, legal issues, ethical issues, utility, and options for sustainability.
  4. Assess contemporary issues and futures trends of digital curation.

Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts and skills and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures, seminars and online notes with opportunities to discuss their use in case studies during tutorials and group discussions (including online forums).
