COTH1053A Master’s Degree Thesis (Part A)


Course Description

This course is designed to enhance the students’ capabilities to perform quality research activities in specific areas of Chinese Medicine. The course requires the student to carry out original research work and completion of a thesis. The major research areas include clinical trials on Chinese herbal medicine and/or acupuncture in the management of clinical conditions, such as allergic rhinitis, COPD, asthma, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, insomnia, headache and chronic pain, and laboratory studies on Chinese herbal medicines and acupuncture, such as pharmacological actions of Chinese medicinal herbs.

This course is available for part-time students.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

After completing this course the successful candidate will have:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of evidence-based Chinese medicine practice and research;
  2. Knowledge and skills in specific research areas, such as clinical trials or laboratory studies on acupuncture or herbal medicine, techniques and hand-on experience in operating specific instruments related to the project etc;
  3. Knowledge and understanding of critical literature reviewing, scientific ethics, scientific protocol development and scientific writing;
  4. Abilities to apply their knowledge and skills to design and conduct specific research projects;
  5. Presentation skills for scientific journals, research conference/seminars/workshops;
  6. An understanding of related research applications in biomedical and health sciences.

Overview of Assessment

The student needs to complete a thesis within the approved study period and submit it for critical review by a panel of experts in the field of study. In general, a minimum period of independent and original research is required to successfully complete the course.
