Course Description

This course is in place to satisfy the expectation that engineering graduates have carried out  approximately twelve weeks of work experience in a relevant professional engineering workplace, or had experiences equivalent to such 12 weeks . It contributes to the Work Integrated Learning of their program.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Depending  on the  type of company the student is working with, and the work the student is doing there, this vacation employment has the potential to advance the students’ development of many of the following broad capabilities:

Ability to apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals
Ability to communicate effectively, not only with engineers but also with the community at large
In-depth technical competence in at least one engineering discipline
Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution
Ability to utilise a systems approach to design and operational performance
Ability to engage in design and execute designs to an appropriate professional standard
Ability to function effectively as an individual and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, with the capacity to be a leader or manager as well as an effective team member
Understanding of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the professional Engineer, and the principles of sustainable design and development
Understanding of and commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities
Expectation and capacity to undertake lifelong learning
Ability to use appropriate techniques and resources
General knowledge necessary to understand the place of engineering in society

The objective of this course is that the student obtains exposure to professional engineering practice outside the university environment. This will help provide a balanced perspective and relate academic preparation to career expectations


Overview of Learning Activities

The student should obtain vacation employment of a type that allows him/her to obtain first hand experience in an engineering practice environment, in which professional engineers are involved.

Resources as provided by the employer the student is doing their vacation employment with.


Overview of Assessment

Each student undertaking vacation employment must obtain a letter on company letterhead describing their employment with the company. This letter provides feedback to the student and the RMIT from the student’s workplace, forming a part of Work Integrated Learning.
Students are also to write a brief reflection upon the experience.
