Course Description
Having completed the basic unit of Fashion 201 your greatest challenge is to express your individuality as a fashion photographer. You are now expected to develop a personal style of your own, depicting fashion through your eyes. The greatest part of the challenge is in creating a sense of style that is appropriate for you envisaged audience. A successful fashion photographer must understand contemporary fashion movements and have a sound knowledge of the industry globally. Technique must be the means to the end and should be appropriate for the task at hand. This course is not technically driven, but the results should always show good technical control, along with the appropriate level of energy and mood required for each concept. Emphasis is on development of creative and well-executed fashion imagery.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the end of this course you should have gained:
a sound understanding of Fashion Photography.
a high degree of visual literacy, technical competence and the development of aesthetic sensibilities in order to produce commercially valued images.
an understanding of global cultural and of social and industry contexts in relation to fashion photography.
research skills
an understanding of lighting and digital techniques.
At the conclusion of this course you will be able to,
depict garments and models in ways that satisfy a commercial audience but that also demonstrate your creative vision and individual style.
demonstrate a sophisticated degree of visual literacy in your images.
use your technical knowledge in order to achieve the creative aesthetics you envisage.
communicate with teams of people about your concept for a shoot.
you will also be able to write about your work using the research skills encouraged in this course.
pursue fashion as a specialisation at third year.

All current and past fashion magazines have relevant books on the subject. Both the Library and the School have an extensive collection of material for student perusal.
You are expected to provide your own models, garements/products, hair & make up assistants.
Lighting kits are available for loan from the equipment store during classes and non contact time.
Overview of Assessment
Task 1: Conceptual proposal due in week 6 - 25%
Task 2: Approx. 8 images including pre production notes for each series. Due in week 9 - 25%
Task 3: Folio of 12-15 images and pre production notes for each series. Due at the end of semester - 50%
