PLEASE NOTE: If you have already completed either BUSM1319 Corporate Venturing 1 or BUSM1320 Corporate Venturing 2, do not enrol again.
The prerequisite for this course is a pass in BUSM 1311 ‘The Entrepreneurial Process’.
This course is designed to enable you to apply your academic learning to a contemporary workplace situation. The integration of work-based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), will allow you to solve authentic business problems or address real issues faced in organisations. As an aspect of intrepreneurship, students will choose an organisation and complete an individual project that makes a useful contribution to the host organisation. This will enable the student to understand how an organisation functions, how decisions are made, and how staff interact. The student must not currently be working in, or previously have worked for the organisation, and it must not to be owned or managed by a family member. Students are expected to work between 60-100 hours on the project. After negotiating the project with the host organisation, the student will prepare a project plan that will be agreed by the host organisation and RMIT before placement commences. While planning and completing the project, students are expected to apply knowledge and theory covered in the program so far. The projects will vary from company to company, and may include such things as:
- analysing internal processes, then making recommendations on how the organisation may operate more effectively or efficiently
- developing or expanding a technological aspect of the organisation
- developing a business plan for new or existing business unit within the company
- developing a business plan for expansion of products or services, or expanding to new localities
- developing a strategic marketing plan based on current research
- conducting market research to investigate likely customer perceptions of a product or service
- working with an existing team to develop strategies for the commercialisation of a new product
N.B. Students must have the necessary Insurance Forms in place before commencing the project.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course students should be able to:
Conduct themselves in a professional manner and have an understanding of what is required to enhance entrepreneurial activity within an organisation to undertake project based work and successfully achieve a desired outcome in a timely and effective manner.
On completion of Corporate Venturing a competent student should be able to:
• Demonstrate how to design and implement a project to contribute to an enterprising capability within an existing organisation;
• Discuss the effect of clear objectives, performance indicators, milestones, managing personal time and commitments on corporate and individual capacity;
• Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges of managing a business function, including reviewing, evaluating and modifying goals;
• Evaluate the effects of a new project on an organisation, its staff and strategic capability;
• Evaluate the challenges of changing enterprising capabilities and developing an entrepreneurial culture within an organisation;
• Demonstrate an understanding of how to communicate effectively with others;
• Communicate the outcomes of an entrepreneurial task and make recommendations for future action.
Overview of Learning Activities
Students will explore theories and concepts associated with the defined learning outcomes and the practical application of these theories and concepts via learning modes such as formal lectures, guest lectures, seminars and tutorials, case studies, class discussions, and presentations.
This course will provide you and your class with the opportunity to receive industry feedback on your learning activities or assessment tasks.

A range of assessment will be undertaken in this course that may involve examinations, mini-quizzes, essays, business reports, case study analysis, presentations and participation.
