The course assumes that students have basic interpersonal skills for working directly with service users and their supporters.


Course Description

This course provides a theoretical and practical introduction to the knowledge, skills and values required to work with people who experience trauma. Critical, trauma informed practice principles are the foundation of the course. Socio-political factors which intersect with the experience of trauma, loss and grief are considered critically. Lived experience is valued and forms a core part of the learning and teaching experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

This course contributes to the program learning outcomes of the following program: BP322 Bachelor of Youth Work and Youth Studies   

1.Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect upon the factors, agencies and influences that shape the life-worlds, experiences and aspirations of young people to consider enabling models of practice and interventions   

This course contributes to the program learning outcomes of BH105/106 Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) and Bachelor of Social Work/Psychology (Honours)
2. Apply a body of interdisciplinary knowledge, values and skills in working with and for society’s most vulnerable and marginalised individuals, families, groups and communities
3. Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on issues of social disadvantage, marginalisation and oppression in both local and international contexts, and proactively work to promote social justice and human rights

2. Critically analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical and professional insights from the psychological and social sciences to reflect on the challenges facing professional practice in a rapidly changing world.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain and critically appraise theories and concepts underpinning trauma informed practice.
2. Describe and evaulate the political, social, cultural and psychological contexts that result in and exacerbate trauma.
3. Demonstrate trauma informed practice skills.
4. Demonstrate critically reflective practice


Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in a range of learning and development activities such as seminars, interactive workshops, class and small group discussions, individual activities and reflection, simulations and independent reading and research.
The course involves in person lectures and workshops, readings and reflections.
Exploring situations associated with violence, abuse and trauma may at times be uncomfortable or challenging and the online and in person materials, tasks and activities will help you participate in this course.
Your attendance is necessary so that you can build knowledge and skills required to work with service users.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks
1. Trauma theory map (30%), CLOs 1 and 2
2. Critically Reflective Practice (40%), CLOs 2 and 4
3. Trauma informed simulated interview (30%), CLOs 1, 2, 3, and 4
