Course Description
In this course, you will explore the history and the social context of communication design. A focus of the course will be examining a range of theoretical, historical, economic and cultural frameworks and their relationship to contemporary communication design.
Issues to be explored include the nature of the communication design industry and how it has developed, its place in the community and society, the future of design industries more broadly, and the interrelationships of different design fields.
This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
• Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary practice in your field.
• Critically reflect on your work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgement and ethical responsibility.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss how the communication design industry has developed, what it is, and how it functions both nationally and internationally.
- Compare and contrast business practices and creative, conceptual practices in communication design.
- Assess the interrelationships that design industries have with each other and community/society.
- Critically analyse key historical, technological and theoretical developments and their influence upon contemporary communication design.
- Critically reflect upon the implications of social, economic and cultural issues, including sustainability, for the future of design industries.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course will either take a blended learning approach in its delivery with face-to-face lectures and tutorials and online resources or full online delivery with digital lectures, online discussion and independent research (see Part B for details). You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials, group and online class discussion, group activities and individual research.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.
There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
