Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course may only be completed as the final course in the program or may be completed as a final course in conjunction with a clinical course.

You will need to be engaged in clinical ultrasound scanning for a minimum of 3 days per week throughout the semester.


Course Description

This course builds upon the foundation of knowledge acquired in the other courses in the program, so that you may refine and be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for competent general sonographic practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in general sonographic practice.
  • Identify and describe sonographic anatomy, physiology and pathology. 
  • Explain the sonographic implications of clinical questions. 
  • Use various scanning techniques and acquisition of sonographic information to obtain appropriate measurements and documentation. 
  • Accurately interpret and present sonographic findings. 
  • Demonstrate effective team-work and communication skills. 
  • Perform effective patient care and infection control. 
  • Demonstrate experience in a range of general ultrasound examinations.



Overview of Learning Activities

An online study guide will direct your learning in this course together with supervised clinical practice experience in the workplace. You will be encouraged to explore reference material independently and to read widely in the area. 

 You will learn in this course by following instruction given in the Course Documents and Assessment Materials section of the course found in mtRMIT and specifically by:

  • Completing Case studies as set out in the Assessment Materials area of myRMIT.
  • Exploring reference materials
  • Ongoing Clinical Practice and Completing Clinical Skills Assessments .
  • Maintaining a Clinical Log of Cases while enrolled in the program which is to be submitted as a hard copy at the completion of the program.

Throughout the semester you will receive feedback on your learning in various forms from the course tutors. The aim is to provide helpful feedback. You are encouraged to ask questions of your course tutors on any aspect of the course content that you may find difficult to understand. 

 


Overview of Learning Resources

To access course materials you will require a personal computer with Windows XP or higher version , MS Office and a Web browser, or equivalent. You will also require internet access via an Internet Service Provider (ISP).


Overview of Assessment

Assessment comprises of the completion of Case Studies, Clinical Skills Assessments, a Clinical Log of Cases and Clinical Record Summary.

Clinical Skills Assessments will be conducted at the end of the semester by your clinical supervisor in the workplace to assess four (4) areas of competencies selected by you. 

Students must demonstrate competence in all four (4) clinical assessments. 

Demonstration of practical skills to at least advanced beginner level is required in the fifth (5th) unassessed area.
