Course Description
This course will introduce you to those aspects of law and ethics which are relevant to clinical practice generally and the practice of sonography in particular.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
• Describe the functions of the Australian legal system that gives rise to the technologist’s legal liability.
• Explain the difference between legal rules and moral values.
• Describe the technologist’s legal rights and obligations in relation to the client, the client’s relatives and other associated professionals.
• Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues that need to be considered when treating clients.
• Critically examine legal and ethical issues that arise in health care.
• Identify and explain the strategies that may be used to resolve legal or ethical dilemmas in ultrasound.
• Identify the differences between personal and professional values and how they impact on decision-making.

An on-line study guide will direct your learning in this course. You will be encouraged to explore reference material independently and to read widely in the area.
You will learn in this course by following instructions given in myRMIT and specifically by:
• Completing assignments as set out in the assignment area of myRMIT.
• Exploring reference material according to exercises set out in the course documents and assignment area of the course in myRMIT.
Throughout the semester you will receive feedback on your learning in various forms from the course tutor. The aim is to provide helpful feedback. You are encouraged to ask questions of your course tutors via the Discussion Forum on myRMIT, on any aspect of the course content that you may find difficult to understand.
