The pre-requisite for this course is an engineering degree from a recognised university.

Course Description

This course is a course in applied thermodynamics, aircraft propulsion and aircraft avionics systems. In this course you will undertake detailed study of the thermodynamics of the gas turbine engine, as well as engine selection and materials considerations.  Aircraft electrical and electronic systems will also be introduced.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to solve problems pertaining to jet engine performance, as well as aircraft avionics systems.  In addition, you will have improved problem formulation, analysis and solution skills.  Your teamwork skills will have improved through teamwork practice.

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • be able to analyse the engine performance in the context of the total system;
  • be able to carry out design of flight vehicle engine inlet and exhaust as a single system;
  • be familiar with priciples of supersonic and hypersonic engine performance;
  • be provided with a sound understanding of fuels, fuel systems and cooling systems;
  • be familiar with the major concepts of avionics systems;
  • be able to explain the operating principles of the basic avionics systems;
  • be familiar with the operating conditions of modern avionics systems.

Your learning will take place through a mix of formal lectures and tutorials/workshops, and through individual and group work in assignments and directed problem-solving exercises.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment is designed to test your understanding of both the basic thermodynamic theory of gas turbine engines, the calculation of engine performance and the underlying needs for, and principles of, aircraft systems.
