Course Description
This course takes traditional drawing and painting techniques into the digital realm exploring both the techniques and the practical application of digital painting. The focus of the course will be an exploration of digital illustration and the underpinning concepts of layout, design and readability.
Production and research of digital illustration will be the focus within a framework of traditional painting and illustration techniques and principles.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will achieve the following capability development:
* Production, direction and compositing of electronic design techniques and technologies;
* Concept, theories and methodologies of illustration within electronic media and an appreciation of the rules of image readability.
* Identification of stages of development of production;
* Digital illustration techniques: use of the wacom tablet as a drawing tool;
* Concept Illustration;
* Character Design;
* Story-boards;
* Finished Illustration for screen and print;
* Conceptual skills in visual literacy.
In this course you will achieve the following:
1. Develop a greater understanding of production, direction and compositing of electronic design techniques and technologies in terms of both industry practice and cultural context;
2. Analyse the effectiveness of different theories and methodologies of design within electronic media;
3. Develop a greater understanding of digital imaging techniques
4. Apply digital illustration techniques;
5. Develop advanced conceptual skills in visual literacy and apply these to your creative practice
6. Interrogate and synthesise aesthetics and graphic communication theory.
Overview of Learning Activities
Lecture, demonstrations, tutorials, computer studio workshops, and discussions. The focus will be on the development of visual language and image skills within the area of digital illustration. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class exercises and individual projects.
Overview of Learning Resources
Learning resources for this course include course materials and tutorial resource items (this will be provided where applicable on the server and online). Lecture notes and relevant handouts will be available throughout the semester. Tutorials will be based in the computer labs with relevant software and required materials to complete specific learning tasks. You have access to course materials and access to online and hardcopy resources at the RMIT Library.
You are encouraged to do a wide range of reading and independent library research into all areas of Traditional, Digital, Concept and Comic Art.
Overview of Assessment
You are required to complete individual based projects. These projects will require the you to plan, conceive, and create a number of visual based works, and a short creative project that utilise digital illustration techniques. These projects are intended to give you an opportunity to explore an idea in response to a brief and develop critical and analytical skills. Assessment will be during the semester.
