Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
OENG 1026: Solid, Liquid and Gas Waste Management Unit 1
Course Description
You will learn to perform design calculations in gas, liquid and solid waste management. Specific design situations include dust particle removal, wastewater treatment, recycling and incineration of solid wastes.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On completion of the course you will be able to:
1. size a number of methods of dust particle removal (cyclone, settling chamber, electrostatic precipitator)
2. design processes for the treatment of waste water and the sludges that arise from them;
3. discuss the operational aspects of handling hazardous wastes; and
4. describe methods for the recycling and minimisation of solid wastes.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course is delivered within a 2-hour lecture and tutorial per week. Tutorial problems focus on process design calculations. The project provides an opportunity to integrate these skills at a larger (plant) scale. The tests confirm competence in individual skills.
Overview of Learning Resources
There is no prescribed text book for this course. A detailed LECTURE PLAN consisting of weekly TOPIC, READING MATERIALS, TUTORIAL QUESTIONS and ASSESSMENT will be given during the first class. It is also available to be downloaded from the course online site.
Overview of Assessment
One Project and two Tests.
