Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
The assumed knowledge for this course requires that students have completed CIVE1184 Hydrogeology (required prior study).
This course builds on CIVE1184 Hydrogeology, introducing you in more detail to the mathematical treatment of problems in hydrogeology. In particular the course focusses on the use of groundwater flow and solute transport models in hydrogeology and environmental management. You will learn the theory underpinning groundwater modelling, and its applications in the field of hydrogeology. This includes practical examples with scale models, and analytical and numerical computer models of groundwater flow and solute transport.
You will then apply these techniques to a range of practical applications, including mine site environmental impact assessment, groundwater contamination investigations and water resources planning. You will become familiar with guidelines and protocols relevant to the use of groundwater models in professional practice, and cover key aspects of the modelling process including conceptual model development, appropriate assignment of boundary conditions and model parameters, model calibration and sensitivity and uncertainty analysis.

On completion of this course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of the laws governing groundwater flow in porous media.
- Design, implement and run analytical and numerical models of groundwater flow and solute transport.
- Interpret and critically analyse the outputs from groundwater models and apply findings from this to practical hydrogeology problems
Demonstrate a professional approach to the reporting of analysed data, findings and recommendations from a groundwater modelling project
Overview of Learning Activities
This course involves a series of lecture/tutorial sessions and practical exercises. The majority of the face-to-face content is delivered during an intensive course during the mid-semester break. Students complete individual practical assignments during the intensive course, and sit a final theory exam at the end of semester.
Overview of Learning Resources
Lecture notes, references and further reading material will be posted on the course web-site. Groundwater modelling software will be available for use during and after practical session in the computer labs. The software is available on campus and remotely to complete tutorials and assignments.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment is based on practical activities and a final exam which assesses theoretical and applied principles. All assessments are individual.
