Course Description

The focus of this course is on the changing face of international logistics in the 21st century. The essentials of the course will encompass the several important elements of international logistics such as transport modes, nodes and hubs and corridors. It will also cover elements of the contemporary context of international logistics, including global trade production and distribution, global outsourcing and changing patterns of international trade, as well as developments in the technologies and competencies in transportation and logistics operations. Additionally, it will examine the prevailing international trade regulatory environment and its resultant impacts on global logistical systems, facilities and processes. Special focus will also be given to the challenges and opportunities in the emerging international logistics environment.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Appraise and organize various integrated logistics services and operations within a global context using evidence-based research methodologies
  2. Examine the key challenges and levels of risks involved in international logistics to ensure its appropriate operations within a global context
  3. Collaborate and communicate with relevant stakeholders to design and devise appropriate logistics solutions in supporting international trade operations
  4. Evaluate and develop optimal logistics operations in the international trade context
  5. Apply international logistics knowledge, underpinned by research, in international trade operations


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is designed on the principles of in-depth knowledge provision through immersion teaching methodology. Hence series of short but intensive literature review and case-study analysis-based workshops will be conducted (face-to-face mode only). During these face-to face intensive discourses, you will have the opportunity to listen to lectures outlining key themes and take part in group discussion seminars. Efforts will be made to present an opportunity to listen to experts who will highlight on emerging trends in international logistics. You are encouraged to take part in every one of the seminars and workshops without fail in order to develop a sound grasp of the fundamentals of international logistics of the 21st century (face-to-face mode only).
Learning activities may include:

  • Lectures introducing concepts, debates and frame works
  • Structured seminars to discuss and debate the prevailing national, regional and global logistics issues (face-to-face mode only)
  • Deconstruction of selected research work concerning the rapidly changing international logistics environment in different parts of the globe and an critical assessment of the discussions and conclusions forwarded
  • Active engagement in individual / group discussions on prevailing international logistics issues concerning trade regulatory environment, intra & inter trade bloc logistical issues and international trade safety and security
  • Making use of RMIT Online course resources available at Canvas pertaining to the dynamic regional and global logistics industry and contributing critically on set topics through discussion forum

The course will consist of a series of lectures in which students will take part in activities including exercises, case studies and group discussions. In addition students will undertake independent work involving library research, reading and analysis of articles and a range of written tasks.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: In class test - 20% CLO 1, 2

Assessment Task 2: In class test - 30% CLO 1, 2, 4

Assessment Task 3: Business Logistics Plan - 50% CLO 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 


Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
