Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Successful completion of a Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) or an equivalent degree in a related feield and folio interview. Consideration will also be given to applicants with a professional folio and experience.


Course Description

This is a core course in the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) Honours.

To reflect the collaborative studio-based nature of work in media and communication industries, this course challenges you to develop new ways of working collaboratively with peers and clients in a design studio environment.

Various assigned project briefs will give you insights into the responsibilities and obligations of working as part of a large or small team in a professional design studio. You will experience the production, time management and communication strategies necessary to achieve the full creative potential of team-based production. You will also critically reflect on your experiences in this course to inform your future collaborative practice in face-to-face and virtual collaborative studio environments.

The course is structured as an educational design consultancy called ‘The Works’ . The studio based environment facilitates a dynamic pathway you to enter the design industry by giving you hands-on experience. The course will provide you with opportunities to develop and practice your design skills within a creative and supported environment. The projects undertaken have a strong community focus.



Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will develop the following program capabilities in this course:
•    solve problems and manage the design process for successful outcomes, both individually and as a collaborative interdisciplinary team member;
•    recommend ways to integrate the principles of client service provision and strategic planning, with contemporary advertising and marketing practices;
•    evaluate, discuss and apply theories of design to inform, underpin and shape your design practice.
•    assess your ongoing design practice as a reflective, professional practitioner with a global outlook.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
•    work collaboratively and professionally in a small or large creative team.
•    plan and realise project specifications and deliverables, responding to client requirments, utilising project and time management strategies in studio-based production;
•    reflect upon your practical experience of team-based production methods and recommend ways to improve other future collaborative project work; and
•    compare and contrast face-to-face and virtual collaborative studio environments and analyse the challenges and implications for professional practice.
•    investigate interdisciplinary design practice and discuss the implications for your role as a design practitioner;


Overview of Learning Activities

The course will take a blended learning approach in its delivery. You will be actively engaged in learning that includes studio, tutorials, group and online class discussion, group activities and individual research.


Overview of Learning Resources

This course is delivered in the ‘The Works’ studio, a purpose built studio space that functions as a real-world design studio.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice. Assessment will occur during the course and at the end of the course. Methods may include any combination of assessment tasks such as reports, folios, simulations, presentations and reflective papers.You may be assessed by industry mentors and peer review.
