Course Description

This is the second in a sequence of eight courses in the Applied Learning and Professional Practice (ALPP) strand, and is designed to provide students with a solid foundation to combine theory, policy and practice relating to information and communication technology (ICT) in the context of teaching and learning. Students will have opportunities to become familiar with current policy relating to ICT in curriculum, to consolidate and extend their ICT skills, to become familiar with, evaluate and use a variety of ICT resources, including software and Internet resources, to develop a greater understanding of how ICT may support learning, to explore and develop strategies to integrate ICT in their teaching activities and goals, and to consider a variety of issues in educational use of ICT. This course also encompasses Professional Practice, and the three concepts of Communication, Learning and Teaching, and Professionalism in Education that are developed over the sequence of eight ALPP courses.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course, students will have opportunities for experience, learning and action to enable them to:
• demonstrate familiarity with current curriculum policy documents relating to ICT and other domains of learning
• understand various rationales for educational use of ICT, and articulate a sound rationale
• demonstrate personal knowledge, skills and teaching abilities relating to a variety of file management, software operation, and Internet function tasks
• evaluate the educational merits of a variety of ICT resources
• develop understanding of ways ICT may be effectively used to support learning in a variety of curriculum areas
• develop strategies for meaningful incorporation of ICT in authentic, learner-centred, transdisciplinary investigations or units of study
• work collaboratively in small teams to construct understandings and achieve goals
• demonstrate a developing understanding of practical approaches to managing ICT in learning environments
• identify and respond to a variety of issues and protocols relating to teacher and student use of ICT.
The course also aims to develop three key concepts, or Graduate Capabilities, within the context of ICT:
• Communication – the role of ICT in communication
• Learning and Teaching – the role of ICT in teaching practice and theories of learning
• Professionalism in Education – examination of issues in educational ICT.

The learning outcomes for this course include the ability to:

• describe and reflect on the role of ICT in educational and societal contexts
• use a range of educational software to create and plan effective learning opportunites for students
• examine the role of ICT and its appropriate application for learning educational contexts
• investigate the use of ICT to meet relevant challenges of professional responsibilities of educators.

Overview of Learning Activities

The course uses an approach of lectures and interactive tutorials within computer labs to develop competencies and understandings of how ICT interacts with the learning and teaching processes.

Students will need to regularly access the materials and resources on the course area of the Learning Hub. 
Relevant readings and websites will be provided  to students during the course.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course consists of completion of  assessed tasks and satisfactory completion of Professional Practice. The assessed tasks will provide opportunity for students to demonstrate their understandings and skills gained during the course.
