Course Description

Editing Media Texts is a required course for all Media and Professional Communication students. It introduces a series of questions, problems and skills around the concept of the ‘edit’ and how the ‘edit’ manifests itself in different media. You will develop a critical and practical understanding of how to edit different media, the decisions that inform the practice of editing, and how to perform edits across a range of media.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Capabilities to be assessed:
In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:
 

  • Initiate, produce and evaluate media projects
  • Communicate your ideas effectively through the creative and critical use of relevant media platforms
  • Reflect upon, direct and evaluate your own learning
     



 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
 

  • use editing software in a variety of electronic editing environments
  • edit in a range of media and articulate implications of editing decisions
  • discuss theoretical approaches to editing and the implications of editing decisions in terms of meanings
  • analyse and interpret the aesthetic implications of editing
     


Overview of Learning Activities

The course will combine a seminar with a studio based workshop class. The seminars will introduce theoretical themes and problems, and the workshops will provide the opportunity to respond to these problems through discussion and the production of various edited pieces of work. Self assessment practices will be introduced to teach the practice of identifying, documenting and evaluating your individual learning and contribution.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online system, MyRMIT. Required reading material, audio visual and computer resources will be provided.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. All assessment tasks undertaken in this subject will be based on individual work, and will include completing various portfolio exercises, an audiovisual project, and participation. A small component of the course will be self-assessed.
