Course Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of pattern drafting from 2D sketch to final patterns for 3D prototyping. The course will cover a variety of approaches to pattern drafting, framed around the principles of dart and pattern manipulation methods. The principles and approaches will be contextualised in both upper and lower body garments. You are encouraged to apply these techniques laterally to produce fashion forms and garment concepts outside of the standard fashion repertoire.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• understand the relationship of shape and line to the human form
• interpret design ideas into pattern form
• experiment with shape in the generation of design ideas
• analyse fabric characteristics in relation to pattern design

Overview of Learning Activities

In semester 1 and 2, this course consists of twelve weeks of face-to-face studio classes.  During the spring/summer semesters, it is taught intensively 2 days a week for 3 weeks.

In either format, during the semester, you will be guided through class exercises covering the basic principles and approaches of pattern cutting. In addition, experimental exercises will be set for the learner-directed hours, providing an opportunity for the development of individual design responses. All class and learner directed exercises will be compiled into a folio for assessment and future reference.
